From Philly, Renting Car/Parking and using Public Transportation to do NYC in a day?

Someone school me on this. I’m fairly young and from a small-town so not much travel experience . Wife (no pics), daughter (11), and I are planning on flying into Philly watching the Braves at Citizens Bank. I had the thought of getting a rental car for the trip which includes unlimited miles so I figured with NYC that close we’d make a trip.
I’m already overwhelmed by the Philly trip so adding NYC for just a day is nerve racking. But I’m assuming driving into the city and parking is a no-go. Thinking of parking in NJ somewhere relatively safe and using public transportation. Any ideas there? Has anyone done that before?
Also, any ideas on how to make the best out of what may end up only 12 hours or less in one of the biggest cities in the world?
Should we seriously consider swapping the trip around? Fly and stay in NYC and making a day of Philly/Braves game? How would transportation work that way? More expensive for sure but it may be worth it.
Thanks all.

you can take SEPTA regional rail (they have stops outside each terminal) from the airport into city center. If you're staying in city center you can take the orange line down to the sports complex. Amtrak is pretty reliable and relatively affordable for day trip to NYC. I would definitely consider flying and staying in NYC and commuting in to Philly for the game. Consider flying into one and out the other.

Take the train to Penn Station. About an hour and a half to two hours each way.
If go to New York for just the day, I’d keep your day pretty simple. Just pick one big activity for the day (Broadway show, Statue of Liberty, museum, food tour, Central Park tour, etc.). Time goes by quickly in NYC.
How many days are you going for? I love Philly and the history, but 3 to 4 days is probably plenty of time IMO. If you’re staying more than 4 days, I’d probably stay in NYC because there is more to see and do. But that’s me.

As others have mentioned, skip the rental car. Take airport train to 30th street station. When ready to do NYC, take Amtrak from 30th to penn station and back. Easy trip.
If you are dead set on renting a car, consider driving to Atlantic highlands, NJ (about hour and half from Philly) and taking the ferry into NYC. It will take longer than the train but will pass Ellis island, statue of liberty, wall street, and under the Brooklyn bridge before dumping you off in NYC.

I did this for my first trip to both cities. Flew into NYC and stayed for 5 days, took the train to Philly and flew out after two days. Pretty easy.

No need to rent a car, just take the Northeast Regional AMTRAK line, have done it many times and its very reliable and easy. Ab 1.5 hrs from PHL to NYC
ETA: be sure to check out the Reading Terminal Market in Philly

Do you actually want to do things in NYC proper or just see the skyline?
Many many years ago (1990 I think) we took a family trip to Gettysburg and Philadelphia. One of the days in Philly we drove to Jersey City and went to Liberty State Park. Amazing views of lower Manhattan, the Statue, and Ellis Island.
At that time you could take a ferry from the park out to Liberty Island and do all the stuff there (this was before Ellis Island was reopened). Post 9/11 and all of the security and tickets required I don't know if that ferry still runs.

As others have said, no real need to rent a car with public transportation available. I agree that you should consider flying into one and out of the other.
That said, if you have to rent a car, driving in Manhattan is not that bad. I prefer it to driving in Philly (depending on traffic/time of day).

Are you confusing penn station with reading terminal market? Or did they add a dinics to penn station without me seeing lol

Do not drive from Philly to NYC. The roads are a mess, constant tangle of different expressways and always traffic, and then of course parking is very tough and incredibly expensive in NYC. It's all anxiety inducing. Take the train.

Take Amtrak from PHL 30th Street Station to NYC Moynihan. ~1hr 20min on regional or ~59 min on the Acela. Trains run very frequent, so lots of options to chose as far as time.
You will majorly regret driving and dealing with tunnel travel.
