Aperture is how much light is allowed through the lens. Nikon is configured different from canon, but there's a dial you can turn that will change it from f/22 to f/3.5 or something like that. At night, you want that number to be the smallest possible.
ISO is how much the camera will brighten up a picture digitally. You typically want to stay in the 100-800 range, otherwise you start to get some noise or little white spots in the photo. Of course, that can be lessened in Lightroom
BTW, it's not the equipment that makes the photos. Your equipment is plenty capable of taking these shots too. Get comfortable practicing with what you have before trying to get new toys. The first lens you might want is a 50mm f/1.8 though. It's a prime lens (doesn't zoom) that provides sharp photos with a nice bokeh (blur around the subject)

Thanks for the camera tips.
I will mess around with it over the weekend.
I don't think I mentioned but I will going to Alaska in June. We will be taking a cruise but hope to get some amazing shots.

Great Trip. How did you book this or with who?

Booked through Delta, which I saw in Cuse's thread. I had a $50 credit, so the flight was $310 for me. There were a bunch of dates available. I believe Alaska Airlines/Delta had a deal for $36 SEA-ANC for most spring dates. That's why it was so cheap. I wanted to make sure to go when I could see the Northern Lights, and last weekend was pretty close to the last chance. You can even see in most pictures that there was a little light on the horizon, even at 2:00AM.

That'd be great, too. But sort of what I meant was that everyone on this travel board ought to post pictures of their travels, like you've done.

First cruise ship comes in tomorrow. Whales and bears are both active early this year.

Thanks for posting this. Do you have a site where I could see more of these rates or some contact information?

When would be an ideal time to do a trip like this? Maybe a 4 to 6 week window for this trip?
