Bringing the family to CO for a week, leaving Friday.

4 days Estes Park, 4 Days Winter Park and two days in Denver.

What are some of the better hikes for kids in the area? There are so many options I’m having trouble narrowing it down.

Any tips?

Can't remember the names of hikes we did but just wanted to tell you to make sure and grab some cinnamon rolls from cinammons bakery in estes. Make sure and order the day before or go real early.

How old? Estes Cone is fairly easy.

3 lakes - Dream, Nymph, and Emerald You can hike to one, two, or three. More difficult hike to the third, but not too bad. My son was about two when we did it. He wouldn’t walk to the first two which are easy trails, but he scrambled over the boulders to get to the third. Lots of people is the downside. I think you may have to park and then catch a shuttle to trail head unless things have changed.

Gem lake is another hike. I think it starts outside the park.

Go early and get back by lunch so you miss the thunderstorms.

Take Trail Ridge Road. Stop and take some short hikes off the road.

Might wanna call the park and see what is still covered in snow. A lot of the park is still snow packed and we are expecting snow this weekend above 9000’.

You can check into rafting trip but some rivers are closing to the cfs being too high to be safe.

We had a long winter and summer hasn’t really got going yet. But the drought is over and no fire bans for camping!

That's the classic and the best hike for someone with kids.

Trail Ridge Road if it is open. Just looked, it is. I like to take Fall River Road up (if it is open).

Mills Lake is a good hike.

If at all possible get to the trail heads EARLY for the parking, otherwise you'll probably have to take shuttles. It's also for the weather, afternoon storms are common.

Alberta Falls is fairly short and nice. Or you could just walk along the stream in Moraine Park for a hike as short as you want with a nice view of the front range.

Download AllTrails app if you don’t have it. Very helpful for picking out trails and then navigating them.

We just got back a couple weeks ago. Lots of snow so we stuck with Gem Lake Trail (good warm up hike and close to town) and then Deer Mountain trail (great views). We had hoped to to Sky pond but with the snow/ice it would have been too much.

Drive Trail Ridge Road. Great way to spend a day in the park. Pack a lunch for a picnic. Spend some time in visitor center. Stop at the top and walk up the look out spots. I drive it every time I’m in RMNP.

Estes Park has a marina and you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, etc. on Lake Estes - did that with my kids and they loved it.

We did 1 day in RMNP last week. Did the dream (nymph, dream, emerald) lake hike. Can be done with kids, although from dream to emerald there was still a good bit of snow. We did that and trail ridge road.

Thanks all. I heard about the snow coming through. Not sure how prepared we are for hiking in the snow, but we will endeavor.

Youngest is 8 and in great shape. Thanks for all the tips.

We are rafting Sunday, looks like it will be a cold MFer.

it is cold no matter what, just hope it doesn't rain on you the whole time. If you are catching out of BV/Salida area it doesn't get much rain there. We went a few weeks ago and it was snowing when we get in the rafts but then the sun came out for the rest of the trip. Rivers are running fast, your trip time will probably half of what it normally is.

Call the ranger stations and see what they say about trails. You can rent snowshoes at several shops in towns. Postholing up to your waist is zero fun. If they say you need snowshoes get em.

I would imagine anything above 10k and north facing will be under a few feet of snow still.

Downhill bike parks in Granby and Winter Park are open now. You can rent everything you will need. Ride the lifts up and fly down.

The road to the top of Mt Evans is open for the year and worth a few hours.

According to my weather app summer is actually showing up here next week so the mtns will be stellar

Snowshoes are not necessary for any trail that gets significant traffic, I've been to RMNP many, many times. In late June there will be some snow here and there but it's really no big deal for any trail that people do with kids, it's been packed down by hundreds of people at this point.

this is from today
quote:

Trail Ridge Rd is temporarily closed due to snow drifts, ice, and wintry conditions. It is closed at Rainbow Curve on the east side, 12 miles from east entrances, & Colorado River TH on the west side, 10 miles from Grand Lake Entrance. TRR will not reopen today, 6/22

so check road conditions before you go
I’ll be there on 7/7 so hopefully it warms up a bit

We are in state Forest state park(70miles west of Fort Collins)and got over a foot yesterday. Steamboat has gotten 20” in the last two days. More coming tonight. State parks have started renting snowshoes for $10 a day.

Trail Ridge Rd remains closed. Rangers & plows had 1-5ft drifts this weekend & overnight temps in the 20s. Yesterday, plows got to Lava Cliffs (12,080' elev) but had to turn around in 50 mph winds, heavy snow & major drifting & had to plow their way back down to Forest Canyon.
