First family vacation and long road trip since having our baby who is about to be 11 months

We left Baton Rouge on Friday around 3pm and stayed in La Grange, GA at some hotel. We woke up Saturday and made our way to Asheville, NC taking the scenic route. It took about 4.5 hours or so. We stayed at the OMNI golf club resort on Saturday night.
Would recommend this hotel... has 4 or 5 restaurants on site and few bars. We didnt really take advantage of anything due to having a baby with us plus we were only staying 1 night.
[/img]

After we got settled in, we went to explore Asheville river art district since we wanted to eat at the White Duck Taco joint for a late lunch. The shrimp taco was my favorite and possibly the best shrimp taco i have ever ate. [/img]

When it was time to head back to Omni to watch the sun set, we stopped at A Souls Pizza joint for pizza's to bring back to the room. It was terrible for lack of ingredients!
Pizza Margarita on left... not sure what the SO got
[/img]
[/img]

We woke up Sunday and ate the 5 star buffet the Omni offered. Great views from our table and excellent breakfast buffet.
[/img]
[/img]

We only stayed at Omni 1 night. Sunday through Tuesday we were staying downtown at the Renaissance. Before checking in we drove the Blue Ridge Parkway
[/img]
[/img]

After about 3 hours of driving the BRP, we decided to head back to downtown to Asheville to get a little bite to eat before checking in. We stopped at King Daddy's and the fried chicken did not disappoint. The gravy was lamb gravy.
[/img]

Due to poor time management, we got dinner delivered to the room from Strada Italiano. It wasnt terrible but nothing special either.

Monday we woke up and ate breakfast at Over Easy Cafe. I forgot to snap a pic but its a very popular small breakfast cafe. I wish we chose biscuit head but oh well! We decided we were going to watch the epic eclipse at the Biltmore. We ended up having thick cloud coverage right when the full eclipse happened However, the Biltmore is freaking incredible. Its a must see in person. We kind of hurried through it with the baby and drove the grounds
[/img]

We went to Buxton Hall for dinner after the Biltmore. They are known for their pulled pork. I am not a fan of the vinegar based sauce which is what they do. The pulled pork was excellent. The potato salad was delicious... It had a white gravy pepper taste.
[/img]

Tuesday morning finally came but first we had to eat breakfast at Tupelo Honey. By far one the best places we ate at in quite some time. Both brunch & lunch menu were available to choose from. I got the chicken and bisquits and the SO got the Southern Shakshuka (two baked eggs*, goat cheese grits, avocado, creole sauce). We got some fried okra for an app and it could have very well been the best FO I have every tried
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]

After we check out, its time to head to Blue Ridge, GA. I have been waiting for this half of the trip! It was a beautiful drive from Asheville to Blue Ridge taking about 3 hours. While en route, we got caught in traffic on some scenic road in the Nantahala forest due to a train hitting a tour bus.
minor collision

We ate lunch at Rib Country which was between Asheville and Blue Ridge. We got the brisket platter. Brisket had good smoked flavor and far from being dry!
[/img]
[/img]

We finally arrive in Blue Ridge, GA. The cabin rental place said our GPS would not give us the correct directions to get to the cabin... Not sure what they are talking about but the GPS led me to the cabin every time (thank god). You end up having to take a 3 mile gravel road to the cabin. The first time we were driving to the cabin, the SO almost had a panic attack thinking this was way to secluded
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]

nothing special but perfect for 2 and a baby
[/img]

Deer were all over the drive back to cabin each night
[/img]

the Taccoa River 30 feet from the back porch
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]

i fished (spin) each morning and afternoon.. caught a few of these and ZERO rainbow trout
[/img]
[/img]

So our cabin was on the Taccoa "tailwater" which is below the Blue Ridge Dam. It released every day we were there around 430-5pm. The river would rise up about 3-4 ft and the current would be moving
[/img]
[/img]

Downtown Blue Ridge is pretty badass. Reminds me of the ski towns in Colorado
[/img]

My favorite place was Joe's B'que. Joe is a super nice and greets you at the door wanting to know where you were from. We each got the sampler (chicken, ribs, and pork). The ribs were awesome. The pork was just as good as Buxton hall. The mac was fire.
[/img]

We took a train ride from Blue Ridge to McCaysville which was incredible. There was a spot on the river that was estimated to be 500 years old. Apparently the indians built these V structures. The men would go about 100 or so yards upsteam to flush the fish into this V trap for the women and children to catch them
[/img]

McCaysville is complete shithole compared to BR. I bought this painting

Since the river was too cold to enjoy swimming in, we went to the Blue Ridge Rec Park to swim and get the baby wet! He had a blast playing in the shallow water.
[/img]
[/img]

We actually drove around the whole lake and will get a lake house next time. Such a beautiful lake!! This was taking at the marina
[/img]

I finally got a delicious pizza margarita from Masseria's
[/img]

The road that goes to the cabin (only about 6 other cabins on the river) has another road you can take for some cabins located higher up in the mountain that we took a few times.
[/img]

Glad we did because we discovered two cabins with some cool amenities... 9 hole disc golf course the owners made plus this incredible pool we wanted to go get in but people checked into the cabin after we finally discovered it
[/img]
[/img]

We went to Mercier Orchards. You can pick on the weekends but we went Friday. This place huge and has tons of shite in the store to buy
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]

The trip was excellent. Highly recommend Blue Ridge, GA as mountain getaway. I wish our boy was older so we could have hiked to see the waterfalls or even raft the rivers.

Welcome back to Louisiana! (few miles before Hammond)
Took us about an hour to go 10 miles

I've floated down The Toccoa a few times, fly fishing. It's fun when the topwater hatch is on. I've also camped on an Island on the Lake Blue Ridge too, and we set out a bunch of half noodles with hot dogs on them, and rounded them up the next morning. Caught a bunch of catfish. Fun chasing those things across the lake.

Really enjoyed looking through your reviews and pictures. There are definitely some cool things I'd love to try the next time we are up near Asheville.

Kudos for doing all of that with an 11 month old too. You must have a kid that loves to ride in the car.

well also helps that mom rides in the back. I think since we have had they baby, she has rode shotgun 5 times. She always sits in the back with him when we are in 1 car!

Cool pics
We are planning a trip up that way either summer 18 or 19

We were up in Arkansas Ozarks and we got put on a gravel road as well. We didn't know where we were at that point but when we got back to paved roads it was spot on and got us to our destination.

I guess it's technically outside of Blue Ridge, but not far.

Tank Town USA

And yeah, Joe's BBQ is pretty good. We've rented cabins twice in Blue Ridge and have gone there both times.

We ate out pretty much every time. Man service is extremely slow in the busy places. They know it and have signs suggesting it.

Nice pics. The Grove Park Inn (newly acquired by the Omni) is a must whenever in Asheville. Non hotel guests are encouraged to visit, hang out and enjoy a flight of Asheville beers on the mountain view patio.

That is some very nice pictures. the scenerry looks amazing. I will be traveling from Appomattox to Charleston in October. Was thinking of spending one night in Charlotte to rest but it looks like Asheville may be a much better stop. Any suggestions on things to see besides the Biltmore.

honestly DT Asheville is like any DT. Bunch of shops and bars and places to eat. They do have several bars with outdoor seating to people watch that wont disappoint. Asheville surprisingly gives Seattle a run for its money on weirdness.

Omni Grove Park would be where I would stay for one night since they have great views and many options to drink and eat on site. However it will cost you so probably not worth it

They do have this cool outdoor spot where it seemed like many locals go in the arts district. I would recommend this spot to go have a few beers and hang out. Look for the Wedge Brewery. Its like 5 buildings sharing this gravel parking lot near the river.

Or plan to eat at Buxton Hall for dinner and there is a several brewery's surrounding BH that you can pass the time at with games. Our table was by the window that overlooked a brewery with outdoor seating and bar games.

I will say this, Asheville loves the game washers! I mean that game is everywhere! I am not even joking when I say that either. They had a washers in the middle of downtown set up in a parking lot for anyone to play

We go to the Ellijay and Blue Ridge areas every year in the Fall. Love that area. Not sure that we've been to the BBQ place, I'll have to make sure we go there this year. We either go to Fighttown Tavern or some of the other places right there.

the ribs were excellent and my favorite. He def. knows ribs.

So the dude's colors are yellow and purple. When we said we were from Baton Rouge, he said he has a story for us. As we were walking in the door behind him, he pointed to a BR sticker that was in purple and gold. BR for Blue Ridge.
[/img]

He said the last person he had come through from Baton Rouge wanted 50 stickers. He didnt understand why someone from Baton Rouge would want this sticker since in small lettering it said Blue Ridge. The man said, no one will be able to tell its saying Blue Ridge in Baton Rouge. They will think its Baton Rouge since the sticker is in yellow and purple.

Anyways, he comes back to the table with a few stickers to give me. Thought that was pretty cool.
