My wife has a job offer and I’m looking. If we both land something, we are going to pull the trigger. We have a 3 year old boy. We are looking in the Manchester/Concord area but not actually IN either city. Looking for something in a small town close to either of those.

Anybody here spent a significant amount of time up there? Any suggestions?

I love New Hampshire!

Our close friends live there and we are in Boston, so we spend a fair amount of time there visiting since it's so close to us.

They live in Stratham, so close to Portsmouth/Exeter.

It's a beautiful state with pretty beaches and some good breweries. Liquor stores are all state run so booze is CRAZY cheap.

Fiance' and I have talked long and hard about buying a B&B in the northern part of the state. We really like it there and it's so much cheaper than Massachusetts.

New England is beautiful, and Vermont, Maine, Mass, NH, New York are all within a few hours of each other so weekend road trips are easy. I am Louisiana born and raised, and spent over a decade in Texas so I NEVER thought I would adjust to life up here. As it turns out, I don't want to leave.

Louisiana. Wife is from New England. I went to college in Connecticut. We are just soooo done with Louisiana. We are both public sector employees and completely done with it. We want to live somewhere that has its stuff together.

I went to graduate school in New Hampshire.

If you like being outdoors, New Hampshire is a great place to be. They get 4 full seasons while summer is fairly mild. Additionally, you are a short drive from an incredible amount of things to do(at least compared to being in the south).

New Hampshire is ok.

But you’re near a lot of places that are great.

As long as you're ok with cold weather and snow, I think New Hampshire is great. It's beautiful and close to plenty of great weekend trips.

I have yet to visit New Hampshire, but it is on my retirement list because of the Free State Project.

If you want to get your kid into a really good school, look at buying a house in a town on this list Pinkerton Academy-Sending Towns. Pinkerton Academy is a semi-private school that is open to families who pay property taxes there. The town's around Concord are OK but the "city" is boring. I'd stay away from any town that would send your child to a HS in Manchester; I think Central is the best of the directional schools but there are better ones in the surrounding towns.

Just be prepared to pay a lot in property taxes. Yes, things can be offset by the lack of income tax and sales tax but just beware.

L Boogie, how far north in NH are you thinking?

New Hampshire is ok.

AF08- I admit the truth hurts. Better skiing and beer is found in VT and ME, more things in MA (well really only Boston), tiny coastline compared to ME and MA. There are better things found everywhere surrounding NH, but NH has much of the good things found in neighboring states with cheaper costs, better value, or reduced travel time.

We have close friends (native deep south) who recently moved to NH (Nashua) for work. They have a two year old and they love it. I'm not sure they've been happier, honestly.

Key word being recently. New England is a fantastic place to live, the long cold winters just catch up to many after awhile.

True. That’s when you go condo/home shopping in Florida to have a place to escape the cold.

I live in New Hampshire ( from New Orleans) about 30 minutes north of Concord and commute into Boston for work. Feel free to shoot me your email address and I’ll give you a shout and we can chat about living up here.

Damn man what’s the commute time?

A buddy of mine used to commute into Boston for work from Haverhill and he said that was hell. Can’t imagine Concord.

About 2 hours each way but damn, it’s a great job and I only do it 3 days a week. I work from home two days and travel for work here and there. I can’t complain with the job, salary, and equity. Plus I get to live in my NH bubble and pay far less for house and land then Mass.

Sounds like a great situation!

Lord knows I wish I was paying NH housing prices over Boston housing. A 2 hour commute isn't great, but with it being 3 days a week that certainly makes a huge difference. Where in the city do you work?
