Estes Park, CO area

The fiancee' and I will be going there for a week. Is there any historic monuments or anything of nature around that area we can see?
Also driving from Louisiana anything along the way that wouldn't be out the way to stop and look at?

Haha, I laughed. If you're going to Estes and not planning on going to RMNP, you're not doing it right. They also have the hotel where The Shining was filmed. I believe it's a historic landmark and you can go inside/get a pass.
I went to Estes last July. Really liked it, but not so much for what there was to do, but what there wasn't to do. Stayed in a cabin for 3 days and did nothing but relax, grill, sit in the hot tub, and drink. Great time. Downtown Estes is a cool little spot as well.

Swing through Colorado Springs on your way up and stop at Garden of the Gods and/or Cave of the Winds. Drive to the top of Pikes Peak if the road is open for the season.
If you come through from even further south and pass through Pueblo, go a little west and check out Royal Gorge too.
There's plenty to do around the northern Front Range/Estes/RMNP.

Lots to do there . Drive the road that traverses the park, but leave early cause it gets crowded in the summer. Tons of hiking trails. Fly fishing on Big Thompson River is great. Lots of cool little spots to eat/drink along the river in town.

Going to try Garden of the gods and Pikes peak on the way in. Maybe if we have time and its not to far out the way try to see Royal Gorge also.

Durango to silverton narrow gauge train ride
Mesa Verde National Park

My wife and I took the train up and mountain biked down. It was organized by a local bike rental place. I'd rather do that than go back down via train because it is slow. We did it about five years ago in late September early October. It was in the 70s at base and 15 at the peak with a few flakes.

It's been more than ten years since I've been to RMNP, but I remember enjoying the hike past Bear Lake to Emerald Lake.
Emerald Lake hike, easy 3.5 miles
And the Mills Lake hike was a bit longer, but my favorite.
Mills Lake- about 5 miles, gorgeous
Leave early-ish, pack a lunch, and have a picnic by the lake when you get there. Stunning.
I think both of those hikes can be done by beginners.
(When we went in early June many years ago, there was still a good bit of snow up around Emerald Lake. Just FYI. Can't remember when you said you were going.)

The emerald lake hike is very easy. There's a number of trails from Bear's Lake.

When/if you hike, make sure you're starting your descent by noonish, especially if you'll be above treeline. Afternoon isolated storms pop up nearly every day in the mountains and lightning is always a hazard if you're caught in one. Above treeline, you're the tallest thing sticking up from the ground. We've had to turn around before summit and start running back down to the trees a couple of times, scary shite.

Great advice. Go every year and it always shocks me how many people are starting their hike late in the morning with clouds rolling in. You just don't mess with the weather there at high altitudes. It can go from sunny and 60's to hailing/snow/severe lightning and 20's VERY quickly.

Get some breakfast at Haus of Donuts and dinner at Sweet Basilica (if you like Italian). Drive trail ridge road to Grand Lake and get some ice cream at Grand Lake Chocolates.
