We’re driving to CO this summer and it’s been a few years. We always would skirt around Dallas and hit 287 but I don’t remember where to get off of 20 (traveling west on I20 from Shreveport). I think hwy 69 by Lindale? 69 to 82, 82 to 287? Looking for any recent experience and advice.

Also looking to stop around Amarillo (going to hit I-25 and go thru NM). Can anyone recommend a safe hotel in this area? Doesn’t have to be Amarillo but planning on stopping around there ideally. Will have wife and kids so safety main priority.

I did that drive (Dallas to Denver) many times. Only time we stopped was at a the Fairfield Inn which had recently been remodeled/built. We had a UHaul and felt safe leaving it overnight in the parking lot

Lindale - 69 to 380 to 287 looks like the way to go.

Stay at the Embassy Suites in Amarillo Downtown and catch a minor league game (Sodpoodles) if they are in town. Grab coffee and killer muffins/breakfast at Garisol Cafe on the way out of town. Thank me later

380 is a small road with a ton of traffic from McKinney and to Denton. I'd let google tell me the fastest way but 20 to terrel, get on 205 up to I30 then get on 190 George Bush over to i35 north to Denton and hit 380 west to 287. I suspect google would take you to downtown dallas, hit I35 north then 114 west through grapevine and that eventually hits 287.

We stay in Childress sometimes, especially coming back from NM or Colo. so we can clear Amarillo. Childress is a small, safe town with major brand hotels.

I drove 380 last summer from Denton to Jacksboro towing a 23' boat and I was not having a good time.

Aside from a slowdown in downtown Dallas depending on the time of day, the best route is gonna be 114 to 287 which puts going through Dallas in the cards.

OP, what time of day are you trying to go through?

Princeton to McKinney may actually be the worst part of 380.

We’ve stayed at Fairfield Inn near airport several times in Amarillo, never had any issues.

You should be fine rolling through Dallas around noon. Especially going 20>80>30>35>114>283.

Not sure if you're going to be able to offset the distance out of your way you'll have to go to avoid it at that time of day. Unless you just don't like driving in cities

On my way back once I went through Dallas and it was in the morning and traffic was horrible. The internet is saying going through Dallas is fastest and wouldn’t have to go through the small towns so I’ll definitely consider it.

Morning and evening rush hour the traffic is definitely bad, though midday you should be fine. You can also order a TollTag and get a discount vs the Pay by Mail tolls which will help you bypass traffic as well.

Made the drive from Houston to Colorado Springs several times. When we would leave after work and split the drive up, we typically stayed in Dumas. It's a little north of Amarillo and nothing to do there, but it has gas/food/hotel. Our goal was to get to the other side of Amarillo and have a quick and easy exit the next morning so we could get back on the road.

Edit: From there we took 87 to I-25 in Raton, NM.

I think planning your DFW route ahead of time is a mistake. You never know what will have a wreck or construction. Just avoid rush hour(s), put all your faith in the google man, and always take express lanes/toll roads when available.

When traveling that direction and staying in Amarillo, we usually just pick one of the hilton properties on the west side of town at I-40 and loop 335 for easy in/out of town. The other major brands have hotels in the same spot so pick your favorite.

I have taken 84 off of I49 west to 287 in Palestine. Then just stay on 287, keep an eye out for the Business 287 route and avoid those. They take you into town. The biggest congestions will come as 287 merges with I20 in Arlington and staying on 287 at downtown Ft. Worth. There is construction north of Ft. Worth but it seems to be mainly overnight. Not sure of time comps but south of Dallas is usually faster than north.

I work in Amarillo every 8 weeks. Always stay at the Hilton downtown. The ball park is also great. If you are looking for a nice dinner, X steakhouse is good but it it’s about 15 minutes from downtown. Blue Sky is a great spot for a cheaper meal. Also much closer to downtown.

35W from Downtown Ft. Worth past 287 up to Keller is a nightmare right now.

380 is a F'n Nightmare, stop light after stop light and if you are anywhere close to 8/9 am or noon or 3/6 pm you are F'ed

Its all timing around here, but mid day you can take tollways and odd highways and make it across. Let WAZE show you the way

Is this a general statement, or just specific to yesterday when they shut the whole interstate down due to a major accident?

If the former, I don't know why you would go past 287. From downtown FW to 287 takes 5-10 minutes in minimal traffic doing as fast as you're comfortable going if you take the express lanes.

If the latter, see my previous comment on not getting hung up on a pre-planned route and seeing what traffic dictates that day.
