Planning a trip where a car would give more flexibility, wondering if it’s a bad idea or not. Have driven in pretty much every major US city with bad traffic, drivers, and roads, but from prior trips to Mexico, it always seems much worse. Should
I research getting a driver instead?

Where exactly do you feel the need to drive to in Cancun? I’ve done it and don’t recommend it unless necessary. The Mexican police setup places to filter traffic to accuse foreigners of “speeding” to shake them down.

Rent a pos jeep. They are cheap. I always grab a clapped out Wrangler and dog it out every trip. You can get them cheap. It's fun.
You can rent dune buggies too.

Really cozumel a Jeep is more fun. I didn't really like cancun as much, I usually just hop over to Isla mujeres where I get a golf cart every time.
But cancun is actually a built up city driving there is pretty safe. They actually have road laws and while you have crazy drivers it's no where near as bad as Northern Mexico.

If you do rent a run of the mill car make sure you get the insurance.

If you get a clapped out jeep don't bother.

I'm actually considering taking a 3 week road trip through Mexico next year.
I want to build up an overland GX to do it. I love exploring Mexican towns.

I have a house in tulum and drive all over cancun/playa/tulum. I have a tank of an xterra with guard rails on the front and the back. If you want to rent it while you're there just let me know and I'll give you a good deal. Not a pretty vehicle, but awesome for Mexico driving. Plus you don't look like a gringo so you're less likely to get fricked with by the police

the highway between Cancun and tulum is well marked and perfectly safe. Honestly it’s a better road than most around here. Rent a vehicle (or take theOcean up on his offer) and have fun

Do not speed
Do not drink and drive
Do not have drugs in the car
Do not act suspicious in any way at the checkpoints

It’s a great way to see the area at your leisure

Sounds good. It's a total POS car, but it's a tank, has super dark tint, has Guerrero license plates, and you won't look like a gringo driving it

I got shaken down in cancun once while driving a nice rental car. Never again

You're set up exactly like I want to be. I really want a condo on Isla with my own golf cart. .
I still never been to Tulum.

You'd love tulum. Hot half naked European chicks everywhere. You can ride around in ATVs all over town. If you drop your info I'll send you over my house info and you can use it to go visit tulum. We also have an ATV in tulum you can borrow and open invitation on the shitbox xterra if you want to ride around the Yucatan.

ETA: house is close to the tren Maya Station so once it's complete it'll be a great jumping off point. Probably 10 minutes to the international Airport so you can also fly all over Mexico.

This was a long time ago but I've done it a few times. Rented through the hotel and only a day rental when we made trips to see Tulum, Chichen Itza, Xcaret, etc.

The roads were fine and it was great being able to explore whatever we wanted off strip and at our on pace but we did have two amusing things happen:

1. Rented a jalopy jeep with a group of guys and we ran out of gas about an hour out of Cancun in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately we coasted into the only gas station on the road. Unfortunately the owner told us they were out of gas and wouldn't have more delivered until the next day. We were in "oh shite" mode when suddenly the gas truck pulled in and said he decided to do his route a day early. Lesson: gas up before leaving.

2. Driving back roads home from Chichen Itza and there a kid with a folding table in the middle of the road with a handwritten sign that said "toll road: 100 pesos". Obviously scamming tourists, but what was I going to do, run over him? I paid the "toll" but when he asked for a tip I told him not to press his luck. Lesson: go with the flow but bring a small amount of bribe cash in your wallet and leave all other funds hidden out of sight.

Trying to find out more about the train but hard to get clear info. When is the Tulum station expected to be in service. Also is the Cancun Airport to Merida line up and running?

I've heard this summer for the tulum station. I think cancun to merida was the very first trip the train made, so think it's done

Thanks for the info! I see the Cancun-Merida route is open, but buying tickets online is mess, looks like you can only buy online for 7 days out.

We have driven a couple of times from Cancun all the way south to Xcalak with no issues. If you rent you Mexican insurance coverage on the vehicle, the cops don't frick around with a wreck. Many times credit cards don't cover there.

I've stayed in Akumal a few times and rented a car each time. Never had an issue, but also haven't strayed off the main highway much. We drove down to Tulum and back into the city and it was never a problem. Just be the cautious adult and don't expect to get away with any reckless behavior.

My wife was once in Mexico on a cruise before I knew her when she was like 20, with family.

They got a rental to go see the ruins and a guy walked in front of the vehicle and laid down and said they hit them.

The cousin driving was taken to the local police station, and they had to pay police to let him leave and pay the guy that they didn't hit, and barely made it back to the cruise ship

Personally, I don't see Cancun as a drive around destination these days. Stay at the resort, book a tour of whatever you want to do (ruins, tulum, etc)

My contact is Nolazachtd@gmail.com
I have plans to go to QR in April and likely one or two more times over summer.
I really want to take my boat down but it's 4-5 days each way and I can't take 3 weeks off work yet.
Maybe next year.
I wish I could find a remote job, I'd move full time to Mexico.

I freaking love it there and feel so at home.
