New opportunity has arisen to work in Djibouti. Anyone ever been there? What’s the city like, cost of living, restaurants and nightlife.

Djibouti

It's sandwiched in between two of the biggest shitholes on the planet: Eritrea and Somalia. I'd be scared of getting kidnapped every day. I've always wanted to go to Ethiopia.

When my dad was little, my granddad, who was an architect, designed a university in Ethiopia. My dad, his parents, and his two other siblings lived there for three years during construction. My dad was born in 1956, so this was probably in the early to mid 60s. He has some fantastic stories and pictures from their time there.

Don’t.

I’ve been there for work. And it’s fine for a week or so, because it’s different, then after that, it’s Africa.

Blackouts, brown outs, shite water, no transportation infrastructure, crime, surrounded by worse countries etc. Hated it after a bit. There aren’t really tourists that visit it, so you don’t get any of the nice things that come with needing to facilitate tourism and tourists (nice hotels/transport/shopping/some safety etc)

Me personally, I’d find a new job. Nobody cares about seniority or loyalty anymore, so if that’s holding you back, don’t let it.

Nah I’ll leave eventually. This is just a means to an end right now.

Welp, I’ve officially scratched this place off my list.

Haha, I've been to more countries I can count, and love adventure. At the end of the day, I'm a God-blessed American who needs some damn electricity! I'm not embarrassed to admit I'm a First-Worlder

I stayed at Camp Lemonnier for 3 months a while back. We did a few things off base but there really isn’t much to do. There was a safari zoo, go karts, and a cool French hotel. The French hotel is the only thing nice about that country. Everyone is really poor and will follow you down the street to beg for money.

Niamey is 90+ degrees, year round.
Djibouti at least has seasons.
ETA: nevermind, it doesn't either.

Niamey has a river. Djibouti has mountains.
Seems like a toss up to me.
Do you have to take anti-malaria meds in either place? (Seems too dry, but you never know.) I hate that stuff.

I would do anything I could to avoid it. I've had a couple opportunities to be there (short term) for work and took a hard pass. I'm all for seeing new or unique places, but have heard nothing good from co-workers and customers.

ETA:
"The alternative is stayingbin Niamey, Niger."

Holy shite. Never mind. Might be an improvement.

You sound like my brother. He wrote to me once saying

I’ve decided to take the position. Honestly the deciding factor was the difference in per diem. Also I’ll be ferrying a new airplane from OKC to DJ in mid December so that should be the trip of a lifetime. Stops in New Foundland, Iceland, Austria or Northern Italy probably, then Cairo and on to Djibouti. I’ll be sure to make a thread of that adventure.
