How bad will it be?
We would have maxpass.

I wanted to go to Colorado but was overruled. Kids have been begging to go to LA (we already have a nyc trip planned for 2Q 2019) this would be a surprise trip.

The weeks before and after Christmas are the busiest all year. Get in the park early and ride as many rides as you can. Then ride them again later (after the fireworks). If you are in a hotel, go back to the hotel in the middle of the day to relax a bit. The middle of the day in the parks is crazy. If you go to Cal Adventure and want to see the water show at night, make sure you get a reservation for a spot.

The whole trip is focused around the Haunted Mansion.
That's all they really want to see. They are obsessed with Nightmare before Christmas.

Really bad. I went with family the 27th through 29th and it was insane.

I enjoy Disneyland with family, and that was rough. It was so crowded at times I resorted to crawling. Yes, I know that forsakes all my manhood, but in the moment...

This is for Disney World, I suspect Disney Land is along these same lines...

My family has been going to Disneyland at least every other year since 2002. The crowds for the trip between Christmas and New Year's in 2016 were the worst we have ever seen. Universal Studios was bad too. Try to avoid if you can.

The Nightmare Before Chistmas theme at Haunted Mansion starts right after Halloween. Go in November and see it without the crowds. Plus the days will still likely be warm/hot in Nov. with Santa Ana wind conditions.

Kids aren't out of school then.

I have a one week window to travel. I'm going to LA that week. It's set in.stone.

I went to DL last October in a whim so I've seen the mansion.
The kids have been mad since.

I was at DL the last week of January of this year.

It was sublime: weather, crowd size, & experience.

You should probably go during the first or second week of December to catch the Nightmare overlay but not the horrific Xmas crowds.

Allegedly the last day of DL Christmas this season is 1/6/19.

Jesus man don't do it!!!!!! Was guilted into going last year at Christmas time. Unless you like beyond insane crowds then find a way out. I compared it to walking into to Tiger stadium 45 minutes before kick off when the play Bama. Just a solid mass of humanity going in every direction.

A lot of people, but there's always a lot of people. The one time I went around this time was just after new years and I remember all the decent rides being broke.

I went to DisneyWorld for CapitalOne Bowl v Penn State during that week. Never again. That experience has scarred me. I will never again go to anything Disney over Christmas break. It’s like committing vacation suicide.

Disneyland does ride refurbishments every year, and they usually choose times with low crowds. January is when a lot of the refurbs start. It sucks for the people visiting that time of year, but they have to do maintenance sometime.

To answer the OP, I don't think I'd ever go during Christmas week. People who are saying it's always crowded are mostly correct, but there is no comparison between Christmas and late September, January, etc.

My wife and I used to pull our kids out of school to do mid-week Disney trips until they all started a STEM high school that has a Nazi-like attendance policy. If you have no other choice but the period between Xmas and New Years, be prepared to do 1/4 (at most) of what you could ordinarily do at Disneyland. Good luck.

What he said...^^^^^

If you can somehow manage a trip after Thanksgiving break and before Christmas break, you can see all the Christmas Disney has to offer without the insane crowds.

It's going to be bad. Very crowded.

Have a plan for what you want to do, and what you will be ok with if you skip. For example, if you don't care about fireworks, that's a good time to do rides.

With max pass I figure we can get on ten rides. That's fine with me. There are six we really want to ride.
We may just skip California Adventures.

Bring a phone charger with you in the parks. Using MaxPass will drain your phone battery fast.
Good luck.

Are you staying at a Disney Hotel? If so, you get the extra Magic hours so you'll be able to ride things pretty easily then.
Otherwise, get their before it officially opens. They sometimes will start letting you in the park but won't let you past the halfway point of Main Street. Be the first ones there and you can hoof it to whatever ride you want. You can get in a few good rides before the real crowds hit. Then use your fastpasses. Plan it out.
