Hello all, considering DC as our Honeymoon spot as we both have a love of history.

We’re looking for recommendations on what to do while in DC. The monuments and Smithsonian of course, but we wanna hear what you enjoyed and didn’t enjoy about your trip to the nation’s capital.

Restaurants, entertainment, etc are all being asked!

There is a free bus service around the mall that stops at most of the good places. Don’t skip outside of DC such as Mt. Vernon. The USMC museum just down the river is a good visit. As far as eating we ate at a bar off of the mall called Harry’s. Not too bad. Don’t remember any other places of note. We did eat in the Capitol and it is not bad.

I was debating taking my kids up to DC mardi gras week so they can see our history and such. Still haven't decided what I want to do. Flights arent the cheapest that week knowing a lot of people are traveling. Considered doing a long road trip and stopping in different spots on the way.

Email or call the congressional office of your rep or senators before your trip and let them know its your honeymoon, good chance they can arrange a special hill tour for you.

We were there in Dec 2020, so we were kind of limited on what we could see and do in the city.

Did enjoy Mt Vernon, and downtown Alexandria. You could combine those into one day. Mt Vernon to start, then head back to Alexandria for mid afternoon exploration and dinner. We went to Mt Vernon on like a night time Christmas deal where they had Washington Era things going on. Would love to go back in the day sometime.

The double decker bus tour through the city was a good way to see everything in 2 or 3 hours. Maybe hit that up to get a lay of the land, and then go back to some things you want to see a little more.

Restaurants: Filomena. Really good food and experience. Farmers Fishers Bakers has a good brunch. It’s buffet style so that was kind of odd, but it worked out.

Joe’s Stone Crab is great.

Things I want to do when we go back are hit Mt Vernon in the daylight, museums, and eat at Filomena again. Also want to eat at a place called Fiola Mare.

If I were to do this, I have a feeling Bennie Thompson would tell my white arse to kick rocks.

Just got back from DC last month....

- tickets to get to the top of the Washington Monument need to be reserved online unless you want to arrive at 8 a.m. to try and get them.

- walking from Capitol Hill to Jefferson Monument was a nice walk and fantastic weather

- the Natural Science Museum was fantastic but sooooo crowded. Like certain exhibits you were shoulder to shoulder with people

- I stayed at Capitol Hill Hotel which was 2 blocks from the Capitol and had a few nice little restaurants

- Did the DC tour at Night and it really wasn't worth what I paid, had more fun walking and exploring myself

- 3 of the Musuems were closed due to renovations (aviation, American history, native American)

- Did not see as many homeless as I expected tbh, ran I to several crazies though due to protesting at the Capitol.

- White House has a blockade a street around it so you can not get close to take pictures. Also a homeless encampment right in front and they stink.

- I went to a couple of breweries as well

- Did not eat anywhere special, just kinda munched on pub food or a local dive bar

- Was a little disappointed in seeing the Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Lighting was low, no photography, very crowded, a-hole guards. Then walking around the National Archive building was ok

Eat at Filomena.

The best thing I did while in DC was see The Changing of The Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Definitely stay at The Jefferson Hotel. My wife and I go to DC just to stay there sometimes. A true 5 star experience.

Food:
Filomena
Rare Steakhouse
Martins Tavern in Georgetown for breakfast/lunch. It’s where JFK proposed to Jackie and it has all kinds of history with politics.
Old Ebbets

Places:
All the Smithsonian are great.
The holocaust museum is gut wrenching but really well done.
Do the email to your congressman/senator for private capitol tour.
Arlington.
We always spend a day walking in Georgetown.

There are some good recommendations in here so far.

I’d also encourage you to go to the Wharf area. Really nice new waterfront area with lots of restaurants, bars, and a nice concert venue. Del Mar is a Fabio Trabucci (same guy as Michelin star Fiola and Fiola Mare) Spanish-style seafood restaurant with incredible food and creative cocktails.

I also love Le Diplomate, a nice French bistro on 14th St NW. then after dinner you and your new bride can hit up one of the many bars that line 14th St. If you like dancing, there’s a speak easy in the back of Chicken + Whiskey on 14th. You walk through this shoddy looking fast food chicken place, and there’s a really cool club behind the back door. Definitely check it out.

If you like Indian food or are willing to give it a try, it doesn’t get much better than Rasika.

As far as museums, the Air and Space museum just opened back up after renovations, which should keep the Natural History museum from being so damn packed. I’d check out each of the Smithsonian’s if I were you… there’s some great history in all of them.

On 7th St in China Town is the national portrait gallery, check that out and then eat at Zaytinya, Jose Andre’s (2 Michelin star chef for mini bar) delicious Greek spot.

When people come to visit, they all love the new Spy museum. I’ve never been, but everyone seems to love it.

Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria are a must.

Bring some comfortable shoes, because you’ll do a lot of walking. The metro is clean and easy to get around, too, even if it runs on a slower schedule than pre-COVID.

Stroll around. Take your time. Wander around and explore. It really is a cool city.

I always enjoy a fun date night of pre-dinner drinks at the Ritz-Carlton in the West End and then dinner at Blue Duck Tavern.

I’m sure others will post ideas in here… they have river cruise dinners on the Potomac and other tours. I always hook my parents up with a private tour of the Capitol through friends on the Hill, so definitely email your congressman or the Cassidy office.

Have fun and congratulations!

The spy museum is super fun, reminds me of the d day museum in Nola or the mob museum in vegas with all the interactive exhibits. If you have a car, hiking in Shenandoah or going to harpers ferry is very fun. Billy goat trail on the Potomac is a nice scenic hike too.

Go to the top of Arlington. Amazing view. Tomb of the unknown, Vietnam wall, Lincoln Monument are a must.

Lots of good food in Alexandria. Metro is timely, clean, and easy to use. Smithsonian's are great.

- Ask your Congressman if they can schedule tours for other places in addition to the Capitol. It was many years ago, but ours scheduled tours of the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, and the Printing and Engraving Bureau. All 3 of these were awesome tours and I'd recommend, even if you have to schedule the tours yourself.
- I once kayaked the Potomac and it was really cool, if you want a bit of an adventure! I also once did a biking tour of the monuments and it was a fun way to see them all.
- For evening entertainment, I'd highly recommend going to an event at the Kennedy Center. You can take the metro and then there's a free Kennedy Center shuttle that will take you the rest of the way.
- If you're Catholic, take a tour of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. All of the small chapels underground are beautiful! There's also a Pope JPII museum across the street that is really well done, especially if you enjoy history.

Lots of great advice already given.

You don't mention what season of the year, but avoid summer if at all possible. March or Nov would be my choices. That will reduce crowding some. Some museums offer more intimate events (concerts, lectures, etc.) in winter intended for small crowds. Some will be members-only.

Attended a wedding in Old Town Alexandria 2020 and found the water taxi to be a great way to get to the National Mall. Or, you can catch the Metro to much of the Capital area.

Definitely contact your congressman and both Senators. Start by calling their nearest in-state office. Ask for e-mail address of the DC staffer who handles constituent travel requests. Then write that person directly about tours and recs. BTW, not all congressional staffers are from your delegation's state.
