Where are you staying? What part of Costa Rica?

We’re going for the first time in July for a wedding. Will be staying for a week in Guanacaste, which to my understanding is kind of on the wrong side of Costa Rica.
I’ll post about it after we make the trip.

You want to go to Montezuma for the eco stuff. Cabo Blanco, Malpais...but the waterfalls outside of Montezuma are a must. Research that area.

It's an interesting area actually. I found it to be quite fun. You're close enough to get to the tropical/rainforest area within decent time in a rental car. But there is a lot of dry forest/geothermal areas of interest out this way also. I hammock camped there for a little over a week and had a blast.

Tenorio Volcano/Rio Celeste Waterfall is worth checking out. Google image search it...

We did transfers to and from airport, taxi if we need to make a run to town and the excursion picked us up at the house

Arenal is very cool. We stayed at the Arenal Obesrvatory Lodge - don't think there's any place closer than it.

Fished out of Quepos (while staying and visting Manual Antonio - this was our favorite area by far), but did inshore, simply because I've wanted to scratch Roosterfish off my list for years. There's plenty offshore options as well though. FYI, fishing isn't really cheap there like neighboring countries or Mexico, but wasn't terribly high.

Rental car was super easy to get around. Never had any issues with roads and the main highway was smoother than most of MS and LA.

I really like this one. Great view of the volcano and a very good trail system. Somewhat secluded (I like that too) so if you want restaurants, night life, zip-lines, and other touristy stuff there are better places to stay in La Fortuna.

For our first trip there we relied on a tour company to provide transportation and make hotel reservations. Since then I've rented a car and made my own reservations. Driving there really isn't that bad aside from a lack of road signs. I originally bought a card for my Garmin but Waze works well there now, Google Maps too.

December is when the rainy season is coming to an end. You may not see much rain, though even in the rainy season it's not that bad.

Probably going to fly Southwest. Any reason to avoid San Jose as opposed to Liberia or let your destination decide which airport. SWA has more flight options into San Jose out of MSY. Looks like there is way too much to do to fit it all inside a week down there. Just want to get the best a week can offer. Number one goal is for my son to catch a billfish. Number two goal is to take in the eco system and number three is to just chill out some. Partying is not that important to us.

For these 3, I recommend Manuel Antonio. Can fish from Quepos, see all kinds of wildlife, etc in the park and it's a relaxed little area with some good restaurants and bars.

Pay a guide to take you on a wildlife hike. The guides can find elusive animals like sloth and tarantulas. Otherwise you might not know where to look or what you are looking at. Bring a good camera.
