Best Vegas hotels?

I know there are lots of good ones. I can afford something reasonably expensive (barring some presidential suite, etc.).

I'm actually mid-flight to Vegas now. I've never been, but I'll report back on what I see. I'll be at the Bellagio, which from my understanding is an alright hotel but not the best.

I was just there last week. Granted, I had my kids with me, but here's my limited rundown of the places I visited. Obviously I can't speak for the rooms but I visited a few of the major spots on the strip. YMMV-
We stayed at New York New York. I chose this one because it was one of the more "kid friendly" hotels on the strip. It has a huge arcade, roller coaster, and Hershey Store and NY pizza joints. Room was huge, casino floor was nice. The elevator system is a little confusion, each set of rooms is in a different tower, and at check in they did not indicate which elevator serviced my tower.
Bellagio: Very nice, beautiful lobby, casino floor has an upscale feel to it. Very classy.
Palazzo/Venetian: Also very nice, similar to Bellagio. Attached shops are beautiful and could spend almost a day there.
Caesars: To me Caesars is classic Vegas. Every detail is beautiful. The Casino floor is a little dark and dated, but the new buffet there is out of this world. They spent $17 million on the buffet and it is huge and has anything/everything you would want. The Forum shops are classic as well. The Roman theme is a little over the top, lots of marble and gold everywhere.
Mandalay Bay: This hotel seemed rather dated. Both the lobby and Casino floor were dingy. Not impressed
Mirage: Similar to Mandalay Bay in that it seemed stuck in the 70's and dated. The jungle theme inside wasn't for me.
Luxor: Very cool lobby. The shape of the hotel lends itself to a huge interior that rises all the way to the peak. The Egyptian theme is neat, but a little dated. Saw Blue Man group here and was impressed.
Wynn: Excellent hotel. Casino very classy, reminds me of a James Bond movie. Very regal. Buffet was amazing. First class property all the way.
MGM: Huge property. Nothing fancy, but a nice hotel/casino.
Those are a few of my observations. What's great about Vegas is that they have something for every taste and budget. If I were to go back with adults I would probably stay at Caesars or Bellagio.

It'll just be my wife and I. Late anniversary trip. First kidless trip in years, so I'll want to avoid NY, NY

Yeah, NY NY is definitely not a romantic spot! Caesars, Bellagio, Ventian etc. are better options. Wynn is very upscale as well, but its a little north on the strip

I agree with slingers comments. However, and I'm not advocating for NY NY as I've never stayed there -- it's by no means a kid joint. A kid joint would belong to Circus Circus (shocker, right?).
I believe you would enjoy the Wynn. There weren't any corners cut short on anything inside the casino. The only downside, as slinger mentioned, is its on the north end of the strip.
For what you're looking for, I would consider : Bellagio, caesars, palazzo/venetian, wynn/encore, aria, and cosmo.
I can also mention these to stay away from, lodging wise:
Excalibur, luxor, harrahs, flamingo (it's a classic, but probably not for romantic), Tropicana, ballys.

My wife and I just went from the 27 to 30 of December. It was our 15 year anniversary trip, 1st trip in thirteen years without kids. It was also our first time in Vegas...took a direct flight on southwest out of New Orleans Tuesday night. We landed at 8:15, took an uber to the hotel and were out walking around by 9:45
We stayed in the Venetian. I picked it because all of the rooms were suites without having to upgrade. The room was huge. We must have walked 15 miles in 2 full days!
We had a blast walking through each casino and then just hanging out at ours walking through shops and playing slots and table games.
The thing about the trip was you could make it as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. We would split a large sandwich ,fries and a slice of cake for dinner from a restaurant in the hotel for $30 and bring it back to the room and watch the bowl games.
We ended up losing roughly $50 in the casino after it was all said and done for probably 8 hrs of gambling
It was an awesome trip and we are now looking to make it a yearly get away.
We booked everything through southwest and found that to be the best deal

Stay at the Cosmopolitan. Get a room with a balcony overlooking the Bellagio fountains. You'll thank me later...

It is so much fun. It is a lot cleaner and well kept than I expected...on par with Disney world! I was really expecting it to be more like the FRENCH quarter, boy was I wrong.
Have a great trip.

Top tier- cosmo, aria, wynn/encore
Next tier- Bellagio (was the best hotel when it first opened, has since been surpassed by the above), Venetian/palazzo, caesars, Mandalay Bay (just barely makes this cut, the location sucks as it's on the beginning of the strip and seperate from all the action. The property itself is excellent)
Middle tier- too many to mention
Don't bother- Excalibur, circus circus, stratosphere, hooters

I've stayed at Bellagio twice, Cosmo once and the last time was Aria. Aria was the nicest but Cosmo had the best looking women. I could people watch all day there. Be sure to stay on a weekend if you like racehorse women.

I have been to Vegas about 15 times since 1980. The 1st time I went I stayed at Caesar's Palace when it was the state of the art hotel/casino in town. That is my sentimental favorite and is still one of my favorites, but our #1 place right now is the Venetian. You can't go wrong with any of the rooms there. They are all large suites. Caesar's is great but some rooms are nicer than others depending on which tower they put you in.

Venetian is pretty cool...

Here in LV now at the Bellagio. It's nice, but based on outside looks alone, the Aria seems to be the place to be.

What's the price of cosmo rooms with balcony overlooking fountain? I've always stayed at Venetian/palazzo as they run really good deals sometimes and the rooms are all massive suites.
