Next June I will be going to a shooting competition in WY so the family will meet me for 5 days to do Yellowstone. A friend and myself plan to leave on Friday/Saturday and make the drive, then my family will fly up on Monday and stay until Friday.

Our shooting competition will be in Glenrock, WY, but we will drive over to the competition on Thursday. With 3 kids, wife, and a couple of friends, is it better to stay on the North end to be closer to towns and fly into Bozeman? Also, is VRBO the preferred site to book a home on? Seems to have the biggest selection.

I flew into Bozeman. Yellowstone is huge and most people underestimate the amount of time it takes to move around the park. Throw in bison on the road, a grizzly sighting, etc… and the traffic comes to a stop and backs up. I post all of that to say if you can, stay in the park. We rotated our stays there. We stayed in old faithful inn, the canyon area, and in mammoth. We also got up early to get out and explore. Most people wake up, mill around, eat breakfast, etc… and then get going. By 10:00 things start to get crowded, but you can see a lot of things by 10:00.

Rooms in the park book up fast, so try to book early. If there are none available when you look be sure to check back often. They used to have a generous cancellation policy, so people would book rooms they might not stay in and cancel them later.

It’s definitely much better to move locations OP, or at least not be in the same place the entire time. If you have never been to Grand Teton National Park I’d suggest a day there also, at least. The park road is basically in a figure 8 and you want to work your way either clockwise or counterclockwise to make the best use of your time.

when we went we stayed 1 night in mammoth 2 nites at canyon and 1 night at the lake. Canyon is centrally located and would be my choice if you don’t want to move around

Yellowstone is for tent camping IMO.
Most campgrounds are first come, first served, so just get to the campground early.

I appreciate all of the advice, but it seems the trip keeps growing. Will be 5 adults and 3 kids. Really looking at houses now since we will have >$20k in shooting gear with us. Would like to have a place to lock it up securely during the day while we explore.

Friend,

As mentioned the best place to stay, as with all national parks, is at the park’s flagship lodge. Even if they are booked now, if you look frequently in the official Xanterra website eventually you will find accommodations. Do not ever use the website US Park Lodging. It looks official, but they will almost certainly book you outside the park and charge you a large fee for booking where you could book yourself for no charge.

I prefer Old Faithful Inn to the hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs for style and location. If you are not able to get a room, which means you didn’t try hard enough, West Yellowstone has some nice cabins and motels. It is a lively and fun town in the summer with plenty to do. Wild West Pizza is an old favorite. Do not expect big city pizza and you will likely be satisfied with its average product.

I do not like Gardiner very much. The town as a whole usually shuts down by sundown and the restaurant options there are sparse and bad. It is the closest town to the park from Bozeman, but I will never stay there again.

Although both are probably not geographically sensible to you, I love Silver Gate, a tiny mining town at the northeast gate of the park. It is remote and takes a long journey to get there, but it is wild and rugged and beautiful. Hemingway was very fond of the town. It puts you near the Beartooth Highway, which is a fascinating drive if open.

If you change your mind and fly into Jackson Hole, which is never a bad idea, staying in one of the NPS accommodations with the Grand T***** is wonderful.

Yours,

Staying in the park lodges is the best option, but they book up quickly. Also need to map your daily routes ahead of time to know which lodges you'd want to reserve. Unlikely that it makes the most sense to stay in the same lodge the entire trip.

We went May 2021 & they cancelled our lodge reservations a few weeks before our trip due to Covid staffing issues. So we ended up staying at 3 separate hotels outside different entrances of Yellowstone. Jackson Hole, WY, Gardiner, MT, & Island Park, ID. All 3 towns were still good locations for what we did each day in Yellowstone.

I lived in Gardiner two summers while working for the park. Sun didn’t go down till after 9pm. The population is like 700 people so what do you expect? Round the clock luxury dining? Plenty of bars were open late enough.

My tip for this then would be to book a place in Jackson hole. Get a hotel room for one night in Yellowstone and just spend 2 days doing Yellowstone. The other 3 Jackson Hole/ grand Teton stuff.

You can do 90% of the most popular Yellowstone stuff in 2 days.

Most people vastly underestimate the amount of driving. The area is vast. It’s 1.5 hours from Gardiner, Mt to Old Faithful right now with no traffic. It could be 2.5-3 hours in the summer one way. If you stay in a house outside of the park you will stop going to the park after 2-3 days because of the commute.
