Looking at flying into Calgary and doing probably 4 nights or so at each park. Glacier has been on my list for a while and when looking at which airport to fly into Calgary seems like a good option and I noticed Banff is only like an hour and a half away.

How does Banff compare to some of the better US Parks and has anyone done a trip similar to this have any advice on logistics must sees/dos etc...

Timing of the trip would probably be early June.

Interested in responses, we are going to Banff/Jasper in 2020 for a family reunion around June as well. Calgary is were I'm told to fly into to.

Family and I did Banff last year during December. Was absolutely breathtaking. We were able to stay at the fairmont as well which is gorgeous. Didn't make it up to Jasper but my dad was in Edmonton for a conference and drove through Jasper. Said it was one of the most amazing drives he's ever done.

As for things to do the fairmont has tons of activities for kids. Hiking and the hot springs are pretty cool. The wild life was cool too. Rams are just chilling on the side of the road licking the salt off to them.

Since we went in December I skied everyday while my family hung around the fairmont and drove to lake Louise. I would definitely check on the fairmont at both locations and do lake Louise.

Lot of the roads will still be closed in both places. You won't be able to drive all of Going to the Sun in Glacier.

What about mid June? I'd like to go before it gets too crowded out there.

Icefields Parkway will be open in June, well worth the drive.

GTTS has opened as late as July 15 some years. That’s not the norm but possible. Normally by July 4th it’s open.

We were in Banff in mid June of this year. All roads were open and it was unseasonably warm. Lake Louise was very crowded around noon but not bad early in the morning. Did not make it to Jasper but I would recommend staying there a couple of days then remainder of trip in Banff or Canmore to reduce the driving time back and forth on the icefields parkway. Best trip I’ve ever been on.

We did Banff/Glacier in June a few years ago by flying into Calgary. Banff is incredibly beautiful, but we found a little more to do in Glacier as far as camping. Both areas are awesome. Most beautiful part of the world not located on the ocean IMO.

GTS road opened on the last day of our trip and was a great drive. We stayed in the south part of the park, and the park is huge, so having to drive around it after hikes around Mary’s lake was a pain in the arse. I would recommend waiting until gts road opens.

Almost ran into a Grizzly on one of our hikes. He jumped off of the trail into a meadow at lightning speed, but seeing him was definitely a highlight.

June is early for Glacier but fine for Banff. 8 days for both could be tight.

For Banff, I recommend starting in Calgary and driving to Banff. Definitely take the Icefields Parkway to Jasper and spend a night in Jasper seeing the sites along the way there/back.
