Looking for suggestions on where to stay. Probably going to rent a house for 8 people, and trying to figure out what streets I want to be close to. What's the best area for bars, nightlife, strip clubs, etc.?

Also...Transportation...Are rail cars the best mode of transportation?

Portland lacks nightlife. Great day time drinking city tho. Best area to say in is pearl. Just bar hop, so many places.

Well, no wonder you didn't find any nightlife. Pearl is nice but its upscale. I always stay in East Portland between Burnside and Hawthorne and the river and 16th street or so. From there, you can walk most anywhere. Sassy's and Union Jacks are two good, divey strip bars right there. Or you can walk 10 minutes down burnside and across the river to downtown. There are a bunch of bars and strip clubs around there too....I assume you know portland strip bars are not like most places. The girls are "suicide girl types" and the bars are more laid back hang out places than the typical strip bar somewhere else.

Getting around its best to walk or use uber/taxi. You can take the rail to the airport or the slow-arse streetcar to the Pearl district but thats about it.

So, East Portland (Buckman)...not Downtown is the place to be?

Downtown may be a bit more convenient but more expensive too.

Pearl district has a lot of nice places and nice breweries. However, it is expensive, as Zap just mentioned. The east side is more hipster and industrial chic. More old converted warehouses and commercial buildings that are now restaurants, bars, and breweries.

On the west side, you can just walk around and find stuff. There are a number of areas on the east side that you can go to. As Zap said, if you go just across the river to the east side, you can walk/Uber across the bridge to the west side very easily.

I recommend staying on the east side, close to the river and close to Burnside St.

To further illustrate:

East Side Breweries:

West Side Breweries:

West side is a little more upscale and fancy. East side is a little more laid back and hipsterish.

Man, serious thanks for the information and illustrations! If you were going to stay on be west side, you'd recommend staying in Pearl? Or staying on the outskirts?

Really just trying to avoid having to Uber everywhere, and would prefer to stay somewhere that is walking distance to bars and strip clubs.

And if there's anything we should check out while we're there, please let me know. Trying to plan this thing blind.

Thanks for the help!

I would stay within 7-8 blocks of Burnside. That is the main road dividing North Portland from South Portland. All of those breweries that I showed you are within walking distance of Burnside. The Westside breweries in the photos are all within 3 blocks of each other. The Pearl district is in NW Portland, but there is plenty of bars and restaurants south of Burnside in SW Portland, as well. The Pearl is going to be expensive, but you may find cheaper accomodations just west of I-405 near Providence Park. That is still walking distance, or a short Uber. There is also a Fred Meyer right there, and you can stock up on everything, there.

Portland is easy to get around in. It is divided into quadrants: NW, SW, NE, and SE. Burnside divides the city into N and S. The Willamette River (it's pronouced wil-LAM-it, damnit) divides the city into E and W. If you are north of Burnside and west of the river, all of the street names will be prefaced with NW.

For example: 100 NW 14th Ave is in the 100 block North of Burnside and 14 blocks west of the river.

There are two 14th Avenues in Portland. One is on the east side of the river, and the other is on the west side of the river. 1st Avenue runs parallel to the river on both sides. The one on the west side is either NW 1st Ave or SW 1st Ave, depending on whether you are north of Burnside St or south of Burnside St. The one on the east side of the river is either NE 1st Ave, or SE 1st Ave, again, depending on where you are, relative to Burnside.

The numbered streets go up as you go away from the river, so if you find yourself on SW 20th Ave, you are south of Burnside and 20 blocks west of the river.

So look at the street numbers and you'll be able to orient yourself. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

If I was going to Portland for a Bachelor party, I'd try to stay in NW. More to do and more walkable than most of the east side. You can always Uber over to NE or SE or take the Max. Can probably find some pretty badass Airbnbs in NW and the Pearl

I did a Portland bach Party summer of 2015 we drove down from Seattle where the wedding was. I sober drove which sucked, but was worth it. The best man screwed it up, we were supposed to limo or stay the night and he was a terrible best man. There's an obscene amount of strip clubs there.

There's a ton of Strip clubs and we went to 4. The best were:
Casa Diablo: They put things in things....All the time...basically watching a live girl on girl porn half the time. I'm not kidding at all. I would say its one step above Mexico type stuff. It was out by itself though definitely have to uber. Only use $2 bills which was BS but worth it.

Devil's Point: Real small place maybe 5-6 girls working but they were all amazing dancers, very good looking, and the roll car for the bachelor was literally a 10/10. There were 2-3 other clubs within 1 block but the others sucked.

We drove down around noon and drank/ people watched/ bar hopped. Then went to the strip clubs until 1, then drove back. Sucked for me, but was a blast for sure.

ETA:I didn't plan it and didn't really know the guy that did but we had to drive 4 different times I think. I'm sure there was better walkable stuff, but both the strip clubs above seemed by themselves more so than in an area with bars and what not.

Restaurants - depends on where you stay.

Ringside is a great classic steakhouse and been around for a long time.

Ox - is Argentinian.

Laurelhurst is another great steak joint. It's also a butcher shop, so you can get most anything you want.

Multnomah Whiskey Library for a unique experience. It's a private club, but non-members can get in by either waiting in line or buying a "hall pass". Whiskey selection is amazing.

Portland has a lot of neighborhood restaurants that serve seafood, but not exclusively. Honestly, I would just walk/drive around and see what speaks to you. Lots of great choices close to wherever you're staying.

I would add Pine State Biscuits on the eastside to your list. Good stuff after a night of drinking!

Two locations. One shares a courtyard with Great Notion Brewing, and the other is right next to Apex Bar and The Beermongers. Good stuff. They make their biscuits fresh, and they are awesome. The Reggie FTW...

Never been to either of them, but have heard of both. Both sound very good, but their are a ton of great choices. You can pretty much stay in your area and find great dining choices. I don't know if either of these is worth driving out of the way for.

If you start walking East on SE Division from Woodsman, you'll run into some outstanding restaurants, such as Pok Pok, Ava Gene's, Whiskey Soda Lounge, Artigiano (food cart serving great old style Italian), Bollywood Theatre, Salt and Straw, etc...

Note: Artigiano is the only food cart that I know of that offers a fixed price tasting menu.
