So basically I've decided that once I graduate college I'm heading to New Zealand for two or three weeks. I've narrowed my choices down to Auckland and Wellington but unsure which one would be best. For those who've been there can you give me some advice.

Why not both? That’s plenty of time

Pick one for a base and explore the whole island. There are some amazing views through out.

I liked the South Island better than the North, but with 3 weeks you could probably run through both. With two weeks I would probably just stick to one island. Also, not sure when you graduate but I'm sure you know that our summer is their winter. December - Feb is their main tourist season.

Christchurch might be the most livable place I've ever been.

with that much time, I would do a road trip through both islands. I started in Auckland, headed down through wellington. Then I took the ferry over to the south island and finished in Queenstown. This was doable in two weeks, I would really consider doing this if I were you. The south island is absolutely beautiful, and the north island has a ton to do.

I've just moved back to the USA after living for 12 years in Sydney, Australia. During that time I've made a few trips over to NZ.

Wellington is nice. It's great if you want to smoke some weed, get some Maori tattoos and drink some nice craft beer. It's also Cold AF (as the kids say).

The South Island, Christchurch and Queenstown are reported to be great which as stated on this thread, Queenstown is supposedly amazing. That's the big Ski Area for NZ.

Now, back to Auckland. I'd plan to spend 3-5 days there. The Inner Harbour "Viaduct" area is great for partying. There are also some good museums there about sailing. They have a giant America's Cup boat from "when they beat the Yanks".

I recommend taking a Wine tour on Waiheke Island. In their Kiwi accent, it sounds just like "Waikiki" in Hawaii. We did 3 wineries and my wife who is part Iroquois was trashed after the 2nd winery.

Assuming things return to normal after the Covids, Air New Zealand does a nonstop from Houston to Auckland.

Before you go, to get a view of the culture, other than the Lord of the Rings movies, I recommend watching two TV Series:
Flight of the Conchords
Auckland Daze

Movies:
Boy
Eagle vs. Shark

Flight of the Conchords - Fesh Tacos

And of course the national sport of Rugby Union and a classic
All Blacks Haka
