Will be in Aspen for a week in September. What are some can’t miss things to do and see?

Take Independence Pass instead of going through Glenwood Springs. Thank me later.
ETA: if you’re driving from Denver/DIA, or even Eagle/Vail airport.

Woody Creek Tavern for food and drinks.
Maroon Bells
Maroon Bells

unfortunately woody creek was closed when we were there last month so I didn’t get to toast the good doctor. I think is reopened now.
Maroon Bells is incredible. Get a parking reservation and go early early. The hike past maroon lake to crater lake is a must.
If you have wheels take a ride up to basalt on a Saturday they have a great farmers market and it’s a really cool town. Also from basalt you can ride along the frying pan river for really spectacular secenery. Go to the hot springs around Carbondale. Ride down to redstone and marble.

just saw you are flying in.
you can take the shuttle to maroon bells and also to basalt and carbondale if you don’t have a car. Make sure if you go hiking you have a way to bring water
Aspen itself wasn’t my cup of coffee but the whole area around it is magnificent

Went last year and couldn't get reservations for Maroon Bells parking because of COVID demand. We ended up renting e-bikes to make the trip and it was one of the cooler things I've ever done, the ride is gorgeous and the e-bikes do all the work.

Get a Bison Burger at Hotel Jerome. Hotel has an interesting history. If you have a few hours a drive to Independence Pass will be memorable. John Denver Sanctuary is nice. Glenwood Springs is an interesting town and is a scenic drive not far from Aspen. Maroon Bells as has been mentioned is beautiful. Got lucky and saw an adult moose with young moose on drive out.

The Bells will be really nice. Aspens should be changing colors

Go over Independence Pass anyway and go see the Elbert Forebay on the other side. That whole drove should be incredible with the Aspens turning. The Elbert Forebay is an incredible scene when the Aspens are turning.
The Fryingpan Road from Basalt would also be great.
Outside of the normal Aspen stuff, Maroon Bells and what not.

Have you ever flown into Aspen?
It's a memorable landing
The pilots that fly that route are usually ex-Navy, due to their experience on carriers
Or so I was told by the pilot after landing

I flew from Aspen to Denver in a United Airlines twin prop through a thunderstorm. Many people were crying on that flight.
