Wife and I are planning a trip to Asheville the third week in October. Arrive Monday, leave Friday afternoon. Plan to visit Biltmore and see Asheville, but also am interested in doing the Smoky Mtn Train out of Bryson City one day and checking out some leaves.
Any recommendations for the town, maybe some good drives of easy hikes with views? Anyone done that train before?

Craggy Gardens is only 40 minutes from Asheville. Great hike if you want to do Craggy Pinnacle.
Devil’s courthouse is a nice and relatively easy hike.
Pisgah Inn for breakfast or lunch. Great mountain views.
Sierra Nevada brewery also has a little hiking trail to the river.

Hit up River Arts District just outside Asheville- plenty of great shops, restaurants and breweries. New Belgium is a great spot out there.

I’m addicted to the food at Botiwalla. Try it out for lunch one day, it’s amazing

Done the train. It travels along the river and returns same way. We booked a table and had breakfast. The afternoon train serves lunch. Book the four top tables for best views. That’s the side facing the river. Train rolls back same way so you are on same side going and returning back to Bryson, The two top tables are on the opposite side of car and have sub par views.

Chimney Rock is about 1 hour outside Asheville. Incredible views from the top.

Perfect time to be there. Train is nice. You’ll be able to find plenty to do. Sunset at Grove Park Inn.

Take the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mt Mitchell or if you want to drive farther go to Little Switzerland. The BRP will probably be crowded that week.
The last time we went to Biltmore we did the tour where they take you to upper floors and out onto the roof. I don’t recall the name of it. It was extra $ but I thought it was worth it.
We did the train in the summer. It was ok but I imagine fall is a better time to go. Seems like we looked at a lot of kudzu.
I enjoyed the model train museum that was included with the train ride ticket.
