going to asheville next weekend, but want to spend a day and night somewhere close to that area.(within 2 hours drive)

I feel like gatlinburg is too much like branson for us. we want to avoid tourist prices, but want to do some day drinking with nice views.

Any other ideas? Or is gatlinburg the way to go still.

TIA

Might have a hard time finding that right now; I think fall foliage is nearing peak color. The hotel at Little Switzerland, NC would meet those criteria but they are sold out (a friend tried to book a room recently).

There are lots of small towns within two hours of Asheville that are not like Gatlinburg; Boone, Black Mountain, Blowing Rock, Brevard, Cashiers, Highlands, West Jefferson, Hendersonville, Bryson City are all good. Most of those depend on tourist and have some good restaurants. Boone is an exception I guess as that’s where App. State is.

You might find a VRBO at Lake Glenville. My son rented a two BR place on the water there a few years ago. Or the hotel at Lake Lure is nice; that’s where Dirty Dancing was filmed.

Or, this coming weekend, take 75 north from Georgia into Tennessee and sit in traffic as TDOT reroutes traffic on that major intersecion.

The Terrace at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville has some spectacular views, but be prepared for sticker shock when you settle the tab.

I have a friend whose son goes to Lees-McRae in Banner Elk and he says it's locked down tight. Students can't leave campus at all.

Mobile to Montgomery to Atlanta; take the west side perimeter (I 285) to I 75 north; get on I 575 toward Blue Ridge, that turns into Hwy 5. Hwy 5 becomes Hwy 68 in TN; stay on 68 to Madisonville, take 411 to Maryville, then 129 to Knoxville.

You could get back on I 75 some places north of Chattanooga, at Cleveland for example. Hwy 68 from Ducktown, TN to Tellico Plains is probably a curvy, mountain road; if you don’t like that Hwy 64 to Cleveland is probably a better option.

If you want to stay on the Interstate; Birmingham to Nashville to Knoxville.

Someone that lives in Chattanooga might be able to help you navigate around the closures on surface streets but it sounds like it is going to be a huge mess that will create a lot of congestion every where.

Live in the area. Would get off I-75 in Dalton or Tunnel Hill exit and go back roads to Cleveland, TN. All traffic to west bound I-24 is being redirected to I-75 north and this will back things up significantly. Can pick I-75 N back up in Cleveland.

My dad lives on sugar mountain, a few minutes away. Haven't heard about restrictions for non students in the area. Spent a couple weeks up there in July, nice area.

That’s the school (I think it’s real liberal). Restaurants, breweries, wineries, shopping are open but with capacity restrictions. The great outdoors including the Blue Ridge Parkway and parks yours for the taking.
