My wife wants me to buy early bird, but we are flying with our kids and can do family boarding. Of course because it's a flight directly to Orlando, probably more than half the plane will have family boarding.

I can sit anywhere on the plane I don't care. It's my wife that wants to sit up front.

Thoughts? Should I pay for early bird or risk it?

We never buy early bird until we are at the gate and can scope out who is flying. Check in at the 24 hour mark and then you can better judge if it is worth it. I think family boarding is after “passengers needing assistance” and that number can put a dent in how soon you board.

Family boarding or those with special needs will take priority over those early bird. If you’re traveling with the family I’d jump on that train and not pay for early bird.

Since it's Jackson, 1/2 the plane will have the diabeetus and will board with a wheelchair.

Early bird checks in 36 hrs before your flight. In the order the early bird was purchased. Regular can check in 24 hrs prior

Southwest boards in this order:

Disabilities
Business select
Early bird
A
Family and military
B
C

I always buy early bird when flying Southwest. I am not always happy with the result but I am usually in the first half of passengers boarding the plane which is way better than being in the last half on Southwest. There’s a lot of middle seats on their planes.

Pre boarding does but family boarding occurs after thw A group and before the B group.

Depending on how "front" your wife needs to sit, if it's important just buy the early bird. If she has anything in A she should be able to sit in the front half of the plane but if she needs to be in the first ten or so rows, just by the EB

that not entirely accurate

Early bird gets you an A. It doesn't board before A. Business select gets you an A. 1-15.

There are sixty total A including business class and early bird.

Southwest seems to draw a lot of wheelchair bound individuals who board before the A group too usually with several healthy family members or assistants tagging along.

True. And a surprising number get up during the flight and walk off at the end.

Pre boarding normally allows for one guest to accompany the individual pre-boarding and I see it on Southwest just as frequently as I do on any other domestic airline.

I've flow SW out of JAN many times. I never buy the early bird, is a waste of money. As one poster said, there are usually a ton of early boarding customers. It is Jackson, MS after all.

Follow up. Where should I park? Long term parking lot or airport garage?

Long term, but Jackson seems to rape you on parking for what it is.

I usually park on the top of the garage. It’s just easier but probably more expensive.

i just make sure to check in exactly 24 hrs before flight and if im not happy with boarding spot just pay the extra $20 to get guaranteed A1-A15. or it might be $40 but its worth it to me

Exactly what we do. We usually go ahead and buy it for the return trip because we are not always able to check in on line

If you will be gone "long term" I'd park there. Garage is expensive for a little place like JAN. They bus you back and forth to the airport fairly regularly.
