Have a work offer that, if I chose, could put me and my family there for 2-3 years before heading back to the US.

How is it there? I’ve never been.

I have friends that live there and I have spent a lot of time there. It's a great city but cold, dark and rainy for 8 months out of the year. But for 2 or 3 years I would do it. A lot of the dutch take cheap flights a few times during the winter to Spain, Portugal and other warm places.

I don’t know about all the details that ultimately matter but this is too cool of an opportunity to pass up unless they aren’t paying you shite. What a cool experience for the kids (I assume you have kids).

8 months seems a little extreme? Tulip season is in April and I know a lot of people that have gone there for that and had mostly nice spring weather. Seems like maybe 6 months of dark dreary weather from October through March?

It doesn't get super cold in Holland though, not like Sweden or even the American Midwest where its down to the teens or negative degrees.

Amsterdam is very close as said to many places, easy weekend trips to London, Paris, Belgium, Germany, Northern Europe, etc.

Id do it in a heartbeat OP.

You can get some nice days in April but the majority of the month is still rainy. Same with May but it may be 50-50 rainy days to dry days. One of my friends who lives there is in the south of France right now to get out of the cold rain and the other is in Ft Lauderdale....I guess he picked a bad time to be there, poor guy.

Living outside of Chicago now it can’t get much worse from a cold and grey standpoint.

Ha, yea, although I have been in Chicago for Christmas and in amsterdam for spring break (March 15th) and Amsterdam was miserable with the cold rain and wind. Chicago was not bad. But again, I would take this opportunity and go live there for a couple years. I went to school in Manchester, UK which is dark, cold and rainy and I got used to it.

Do it. Lots to see, learn, eat, and experience.

Get a place outside of Amsterdam . Lot cheaper. Public transport is excellent.

E.g. Haarlem. Commute in less than 20:minutes to the center.

What’s the point of moving to Amsterdam to live outside of it ?

Do it and don’t look back … spend the extra money and enjoy all the city has to offer

That’s a fair point, but the cost savings are good which allows you to spend it on other items and trips. Plus the main city is within 15 minutes.

A good friend's son and daughter in law lived there for about that amount of time. They loved it. They made quite a few expat friends from their kids preschool and did lots of weekend trips and even longer vacations around Europe. Instead of coming back to Houston, they took jobs (both work for the same company) in Hong Kong and are living there now. They've really enjoyed it all.

I was there for a month and a half. It’s one of my favorite cities. I’d go in a heartbeat.

I second the general thought - if they money is there for you at all in the reasonable range, then do it!

Don't care about the weather stuff. It'll be what it'll be. The city is super fun and a great launch point for exploring Europe.

Super jealous.

Good luck!

I was there in late 2011, lovely city. It was already cold but so is the US during winters. The city has a lot to offer, a lot of sight seeing and places to go. If they offer you paid rent, go now. You will not regret it.

Yeah if it paid enough to get a comfortable place in Jordaan or De 9 Straatjes I wouldn’t think twice about it. No idea about schools for kids or anything like that for a family.

Totally go. AMS is placed where you can get nearly anywhere in Europe on a train in a couple of hours, or a cheap arse Ryanair (or equivalent) flight. If you move, I'd plan on being out of town at least once a month hitting Brussels, Paris, Barca, Madrid, etc., the entire time you are there.

Your kids will most likely love it. The Christmas markets in Northern Europe are kinda like the leadup to Mardi Gras; streets closed off for weeks, people getting "happy" and shopping, etc. They will not hate it. Dutch, Flemish, French, German, they're going to hear so many languages, it'll be awesome. You can literally hit anywhere between Belfast and Sicily within a two hour flight for cheap. DO IT.

Also, if it's a corporate transfer, my GloboCorp paid all foreign and domestic taxes while I was seconded (transferred) to Benelux for half a year, which saved us tens of thousands of dollars.
