He just means random dudes will come up to you asking if you want candy (drugs), women, etc.
Just tell them no thanks, you’re good and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Yeah, it was up to like 5,000 earlier in the year. I'd say the only real disappointing thing about Colombia is that the food is good, but not nearly as good as other south American countries

You couldve knocked off another $50-60 by booking at the airport. The line that says “passenger usage fee” is a fee for booking online. You don’t have to pay it if you book on site.

I just got back a couple of days ago (not Cartagena). Really cheap flights from Orlando to Bogota. We were looking for rare bird species and found almost all targets. Third trip there, Colombia is beautiful. Bogota traffic can be insane so plan around that if going there. And immigration lines are pretty terrible, close to 2 hours. But the dollar does well and prices are very good. It's weird to grab more than 1 million pesos at the ATM. I can't agree with the comment about Colombian food being sub par. It's better than most places I've been in central/south America.
Just go down and enjoy. I like Mexico too but Colombia has it beat.

Today the NYTimes posted Cartagena in their travel series "36 Hours In". It's behind a paywall, but if you give me an email, I'll send it to you.

I doubt I'd go to Colombia, but anyone have any other suggestions for northern South America places to visit with kids? Considering Peru maybe? I went down a rabbit hole and I can easily get to Orlando, and there's tons of sub $400 flights to Colombia and Peru. I had looked in the past and I thought all I could find was $1000+.

Curacao is 50 miles off the venezuelan coast. Def safe spot for kids. Thats the closest ive been to south america at this point.

I got a nice airbnb by the large park near the clock tower and the walled city. It has AC which many didn't have.
Now I need two more spots. I'm thinking of going to the islands for a day or two (maybe two separate islands) or going further north to Santa Maria and going to the national park.
Though the city and nightlife may be what I need I wanted relaxation and escape too.
Only going for 7 days/ 6 nights.

I'll check it out on 12 foot ladder.

If you do end up going to Tayrona just be aware that Taganga can be a bit sketchy. Lots of European backpackers stay there and it can become a party scene and there's a criminal element that preys on drunk tourists.
We camped in the hammocks on the beach. Otherwise you're probably better off staying in the eco lodges to the east of the park.

I took my 15-year-old daughter and 13-year-old niece to Peru in 2017 for seventeen days, and we had a fantastic time.
The Sacred Valley is amazing, but there's so much more to Peru than that. Oh, and Peruvian food is amazing.
I have also taken them to Chile and Argentina, and those were also great.

I'm decided as it's my first time and I'm only doing a week and going solo. I'm staying near Cartagena the whole time.
I am doing two nights city center.
One night in Isla Grande at the only hotel I found with AC and a pool. Then one night in Baru, then two nights back in city center.
I fly in at 1pm and upgraded to Row 2 so I can get to customs faster.
I fly out at 2pm. So I don't need the last day right by the airport.
I'll explore the first 5 days and shop and get souvineers the last day or two.
Next trip I'm going to explore more of other area.
I can't take too long a trip because I'm doing Italy and Spain the month after.

Mind expounding on this some?
Guys constantly coming up to you on the street trying to sell you something. It’s like bourbon street but worse. There’s also kids that come up to you and rap. Don’t make eye contact and keep walking.
Just put your head down and keep walking.
Also be wary of pick pocketers like any big city .
This didn’t ruin our experience by any means. Just something to note

Must be a lot of whores out there. Like every airbnb listing either says "no guests, or sex workers" or "guests ok".
The street food scene looks amazing out there. I'm going to load up on Immodium and Keopectate and skip my diet for sure.
