I’m sure this has been discussed, but I need to make a large purchase soon and there’s no penalty for using a card. I’m also starting to travel a little more. Any way to get get the most bang for my buck? AA and Delta would be primary airlines.

Most all airlines have reduced their perks. I use American Express Reserve with Delta. It depends on what type of perks you are looking for. Truthfully, were my reserve not my emergency credit card I would’ve canceled it within the last year or so because I do not find the benefits worth it any longer. Your best bet is to review the cards, their perks, and determine what type of rewards you are looking for.

Amex plat business. 35% back on all flights booked with points w/ your preferred airlines. End up saving ~2-4k a year.

How large of a purchase?
Sapphire lineup over at Chase are good travel cards. The Reserve has an extra bonus after you spend $75,000 in a calendar year, you unlock some special perks like getting a $500 Southwest credit + A List, World of Hyatt Explorist Status, IHG Diamond Elite, $250 credit for their online shops. But its for a calendar year so this late in the year, may not reach it unless that large purchase is truly a large purchase lol

I would say the real answer depends on what you expect your monthly spending to be.
We use a few but the Sapphire Reserve is probably our biggest card. About $6000/month in personal charges so for a $795 fee, we make sure we use as many as the card benefits as possible.
Lyft pink
Priority Pass
Chase Lounge Access
National Executive Status
IHG elite
$500 credit with The Edit
$300 Stub Hub credit
$300 dining credit

Initial 30k purchase, but then 2-4k monthly

I would expect then that you won't meet $75/k annual spending so I would lean to large sign on bonus offers.
Sapphire Reserve is offering 100k but has a $795 annual fee
Amex Delta Gold is offering 80k miles and has a MUCH lower annual fee ($0 in year one) but is more restrictive on big benefits with other airlines.

Do not get an airline card unless the value you get out of a free checked bag or whatever outweighs your points being trapped to that airline alliance (OneWorld and SkyTeam for you.) If you throw everything on an Amex Delta card, and find the flight you want to Paris is on American, you're basically SOL.
Chase Preferred and any Amex that earns MR all day.
