First off , big thanks to you guys who gave great suggestions in my Italy thread. Life has been crazy enough that the wife and I have still not made plans for our trip. Looks like we will have to put that one off until next summer.

Having said that, we are wanting to scratch Greece off the bucket list by staying on one of the islands for around 6 days. I read through all of the older Greece threads and it looked like many people recommended Naxos or Crete.

Here are a few things we would like out of our trip:

- Airbnb with a great view
- we are foodies so great restaurants
- we want to pick a place and stay there so proximity to a town may be important as well

From what I can tell, Naxos would be a great place to just pick a spot and stay there for a relaxing trip.

Crete would give us those options with the opportunity to do some hikes as well.

I am open to any and all suggestions!

We only did Santorini so I don't have anything to compare it to, but we really enjoyed it and absolutely would go back. Stayed in Oia which is away from where the cruises come in.

I am going and we picked Paros and Milos instead of Naxos. Give both a look.

Paros is right next to Naxos. Naxos is the much bigger of the two, and is a little more family oriented and laid back. Paros is a little more romantic, with higher class restaurants and nightlife.

Santorini Dave has a good breakdown of the them vs each other.

We kinda wanted to stay away from Santorini because of the crowds and prices but I may have to rethink that. I’ll definitely check out Oia.

We definitely want to go back and check out some of the other islands. For our timeline and what we wanted it made the most sense for us at the time

Are you willing to rent a car and travel around the island?

Yes! My wife is from Germany so she can get a car. (I heard you have to have a Europe driving license?!).

I’d like to stay somewhere with good view that we could walk to a couple bakeries/restaurants but we are willing to move around a bit if it’s worthwhile.

Negative. We’re renting a car in August and neither of us are European.

I don’t even think you have to have a drivers license. They dgaf about anything. Crete would be a great place since you’re planning on staying a while in 1 location. It’s the largest island and there’s much to do. I tend to like the islands a little more off the beaten path, but that’s me. As long as you don’t go to Mykonos Or Santorini, you’ll be able to feel some sort of authenticity.

Crete has a little of everything. Great beaches plus some inland mountains, history, lots of places to stay.

Technically, you "need" an International Driver's License for many rental car places, but from my understanding no one gives a shite.

You can get one online in like a week, if you feel it necessary just in case

We just got back from Santorini few days ago. We stayed in the area of Imerovigli at the Sophia Suites. It was away from the touristy area of Fira. It was very peaceful and quiet. We had our own pool with our room with a awesome view of the water/caldera from our room. The people where we stayed and around the local restaurants were fantastic! One of the best stays I have had some where. Hope this helps a little
