Hello friendly Travel Board people, I could use some advice regarding a somewhat last-minute vacation to the Denver area. The Wife and son (11) want to see some snow and booked flights to Denver from Nola the first weekend of February. We're only staying 3 nights.

I have two main questions:

1) Where to stay?
I see that downtown Denver hotels are really cheap, and that's tempting since we're on a bit of a budget. However, we would probably prefer to stay somewhere in the mountains (goes back to the whole "snow" thing). Any recommendations on towns within 2 hours of Denver? Somewhere picturesque, not too high in elevation (we're coming from sea level). Don't care about night life or going out. Would prefer $150/night or lower.
Anyone with experience in Estes Park or Idaho Springs in the winter?

2) Where to ski?
This ties into where to stay. My son has never skied, so I anticipate spending the entire day on the bunny hill with him. Really just looking for a cheap ski area near one of the good towns. I don't want to drop $400 to stand on the bunny hill all day. Also don't mind driving up to an hour from where we stay.

Thanks.

Do not do downtown Denver, that's for sure.

Don’t stay in Denver. Idaho Springs is a great place to stop but not to stay.

This sounds a Ski Granby type of trip.

You should have asked me sooner and I would have told you to go to Utah.

+1. We did Granby on our first trip skiing and it was really nice. All of the runs funnel into one area so you don't get lost from your group.

My wife had a conference in Denver and we stayed there for three days before we added on a vacation after in the mountains.

After one day we were so bored in Downtown Denver.
You do have the US Mint and we took in a Rockies game.

We stayed in Estes Park and Boulder wouldn't be a bad option either and it's not far from Denver at all.

That seems like a lot of work for vacation. Plus Eldora has parking reservations that fill up crazy fast which could leave you SOL.

Yeah you're prob right. I guess I was kinda stuck on that 150-night for the room deal. Thats gonna be tricky. Boulder and Denver both have that. None of the ski towns do that I've seen. A la quinta in a ski town will be 250+

There are some hotels in Frisco and Dillon that are alright, same with Fraser but it all depends on when you want to go. Granted you aren't in a swanky ski town but you are in the mountains and can drive to any of them.

You can stay around Granby pretty cheap as well if you look at airbnb.

Might be able to bump the $$ up if it was worth it. Boulder might be good. What do you think about Boulder vs Estes?

If your budget was $250 night where would you stay?

Thanks.

I think maybe dillon, Silverthorne, frisco area would fit the bill with a day of skiing at loveland pass ski area. I think that would check a lot of boxes for you and not break the bank.

I'm going for Mardi Gras, staying in Boulder as I won't have a vehicle and don't plan on renting. Boulder seems an area where I will be able to do some skiing and a lot of drinking.

How about Ski Cooper? Pretty cheap skiing, Leadville has a ton of cheap great bnbs, and Leadville is probably more beautiful in my mind than most of the well known ski towns. The only problem in my mind with Cooper is its small size but that shouldn’t be an issue if yall are going to be on the bunny slopes!

I will always recommend Loveland ski area for those on a budget. It’s a great spot!! Stay in silverthorne to save a few bucks and hit Loveland! Can’t beat it with a stick

Leadville looks awesome! Only concern is the altitude. Looks like its over 10k.

Get the hell out of Denver. I live here, and escape every single change I get even if it’s just for an afternoon.

Estes I great but no skiing.

On a budget, 2hrs from DIA, day of bunny hill skiing, and want some nice views? My vote goes Granby and ski Granby ranch.

Stayed in Boulder a few months ago. It was very shut down. Not sure I’d stay in Boulder as it seems like a long way to travel for sking. I’d agree with the Silverthorn, Keystone type recommendations.

Eldora is a the only close (potential) option. Otherwise you have to take the Bustang up to the bigger resorts. The Bustang is only running during the week right now.

“ The RTD NB Route bus departs from Boulder Transit Center at 1800 14th Street in downtown Boulder, stops a few more times before the Nederland Park-n-Ride, then drops you off right in front of our Alpenglow high-speed chairlift.”

However...

“ Winter 2020/21 Season Update: Please note, due to COVID-19 restrictions and extremely limited resources, RTD services will be scaled back during during the 2020/21 winter season. RTD will only be allowing up to 20 people per bus, to help maintain a safe social distancing protocols. Backup buses will also no longer be offered in the event of full ridership.

RTD riders, please note that due to health and safety protocols, Eldora will not be offering seasonal / day lockers or basket check during the 2020/21 winter season. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

Boulder is awesome.
