Boulder seems an area where I will be able to do some skiing and a lot of drinking.

Where would you ski in Boulder? As someone mentioned, there is Eldora but they have a wonky parking reservation system for COVID (you still need one even if being dropped off).

While Boulder normally has good drinking, it is currently very shut down and the people there are incredibly serious about masks. Everyone in town even runs, hikes, bikes with masks on 24/7.

Hopefully you are staying with friends and hopefully Boulder County opens up a bit and allow indoor dining and drinking before February... otherwise I would look elsewhere if I were you.

Thanks for the advice. If we skipped skiing and decided to stay in Estes, how hard is it to find sledding hills? Is there decent snow nearby?

Speaking of Boulder, considering taking a weekend trip this month and visiting Rocky Mountain National Park?

Is Boulder convenient in regards to staying if visiting?

Boulder is great. Easy and beautiful 50 minute drive to RMNP. And you’ll be able to find cheap lodging much easier than in Estes. Boulder is beautiful in its own right too.

Can you drive to a lot of the picturesque locations in the park or do you have to hike most of it? Looks like there’s a road that goes around it and into the middle.

Would plan on spending the whole day there

I’m pretty sure there’s numerous spots to tube down in Estes. Yes, there will be good snow in Estes this time of year. Obviously not ski resort type snow due to much lower elevation, but still some snow.

There are some easy hikes to great spots. Just the drive from Estes to Allenspark is awesome.

I would drive to Bear Lake. That's the most pictureesque spot that you can easily drive to right now. After that, you could probably do a short hike to Emerald and Dream Lakes.

The drive to Estes is very nice. As well as to Allenspark as stated above.

A lot of the best scenic driving routes in CO right now due to it being winter. But there's still a lot of good stuff out there

So drive to Bear lake and then park and hike to emarld and dream lakes? Looks like they are just West of Bear Lake.

As far as the drive, is it the drive between Estes and Allenspark (Hwy 7) that is so great or is it something in particular around either of the two?

Yeah. Those hikes are easy. Good ROI for ease with the reward

That’s right. Bear Lake, to Dream, to Emerald. Dream/Emerald Lake are on the same trail and start at the Bear Lake Trailhead, so no need to drive more after getting there. It’ll probably be slippery hiking to Emerald but it’s not a steep hike and I’ve done it this time of year in normal shoes. Bear Lake is literally at the trailhead so if yall feel uncomfortable with the conditions of the day then that would still be probably one of the best spots.

That entire area is pretty great around Estes and Allenspark. Pick a direction and it’ll probably be beautiful. But, driving through RMNP and driving between EP and AP would probably be the highlights.

We stayed in Golden and we were 1 hour from our snowboarding mountain. Check out Blackhawk CO. too.
