Air travel not expected to recover until 2024
LINK

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Global air travel is recovering more slowly than expected and it will take until 2024 to return to pre-pandemic levels, the trade association for the airline industry said Tuesday.

The International Air Transport Association pushed back its prediction by one year due to the slow containment of the outbreak in the U.S. and in developing countries.

I think for international travel, maybe that's right but it seems way too far off. Domestic, maybe thanksgiving/christmas. I booked 3 flights within the past week for this year

Now is definitely the time to book for anything you have coming up within the next year or however long out you can book. Airlines are trying to capture all the revenue they can right now.

I think business travel will take 12 to 18 months to come back even close to pre-covid levels. I know for our company I don't see a majority traveling at all the remainder of the year. If we can't get back in our office they certainly are not going to let us travel to a client.

Global air travel probably won't ever reach pre-covid levels again in terms of the number of routes, frequencies, and seats available. Many airlines will reemerge with smaller fleets, less destinations served, and smaller sized aircraft. This is a permanent move with many European and Latin American carriers.

The recovery, post Covid pandemic will be on a corresponding scale after major change.

They’ll find a way to get back to normal.

The Spanish Flu didn’t change everything. Society survived it, and moved on.

Really? You think it will never recover?

Air travel is driven by demand, and demand will return as the virus fades away, and restrictions are dropped.

The thought that everything is going to be different from now on, strikes me as a perhaps understandable, but emotional, and unrealistic reaction to current events.

It will recover, but numbers are going to be down from what the industry was seeing before, and in some cases reductions will be permanent.

I don't think it's that far off. We've created so much economic damage worldwide it will take quite awhile for businesses and individuals to recover.

I think the demand from people who can afford it will be there. There will just be less people overall who can.

I don't think global economies are damaged forever though. That's silly for now. Though the US is the economic engine of the world, so if we fade, that's gonna leave a mark.

This might show businesses that Zoom is just as effective, or more cost effective, than face to face meetings. Thus, business travel may never recover to pre pandemic levels.

Even people in sales and marketing? You’d think that in some roles people can get by with Zoom meetings but what about people selling and servicing (med sales, software sales, etc..) a product?

The very large company that I work for has us pretty much grounded for the rest of this year and projections are for most of next year as well. And our employees pile up a LOT of travel under normal circumstances

It’s not.

It’s a phone call with a face. That can be useful, but it’s not a replacement for in person meetings.

I agree 100%. I wonder if the difference in opinion is a generational thing?

If only ticket prices will decline, they seem to have increased though

I don’t know

The first thing that came to mind is the power of touch. If I tell someone to do something, and then touch them on the arm, they are far more likely to comply.

There are biological processes that kick in when you’re in someone else’s physical presence. And it’s so much easier to build rapport in person.

Depends on the purpose of the meeting and the industry. Obviously face to face is more personal, but have you ever gone to a meeting that you felt was a waste of time/resources?

At least half of them. And I used to travel a good bit for work.

Not a chance in hell

Even after a vaccine there will be a lag period and business travel will take years to recover and probably won't ever go back to the level it was at as people have gotten used to remote. You need in-person for some things, but in a lot of industries, companies are realizing it's a huge spend for minimal benefit other than in critical circumstances.
