Planning a trip to Africa for next summer. My wife and I and our 14 year old daughter and her friend. I've looked at a few places. We prefer something that isnt very rugged. We're not looking to go camping. There is a Four Seasons in Tanzania that seems nice. Any recommendations?

Not sure what your budget is, we stayed at Kapama Karula (private game reserve just north of Kruger national park) in south africa. It was freaking amazing. After that flew down to cape town and did table mountain, saw the penguins, and cape of good hope, etc. then went over to stellenboch to wine country. South African wine country is super nice and dirt cheap. The US dollar was killing the South African Rand at the time so doing everything super nice was relatively reasonable.

I stayed at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, and it was excellent. Would definitely recommend it.

We took our time getting there and rather than taking the Delta flight to J-Burg we flew into London and stayed there a day. Then flew from London to Cape Town and spent a day there then we flew to Port Elizabeth and spent our time in the bush at Kariega Game Reserve. Coming back we did the same thing and spent some time in Cape Town and London to break up the travel.

I can't recommend Kariega enough...absolutely top notch

What I've heard from several friends is that you can't go wrong with South Africa for your first trip to Africa. I was supposed to go there in November. Argh. Tanzania, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Uganda are penciled in for later, roughly one per year.

I added this one to my list. I’m not interested in the country of South Africa for a variety of reasons.

Bummer.

Cape Town and their wine region are phenomenal.

I think next safari I'd do Botswana since that is supposedly next level.

I understand Tanzania safaris are a bit touristy (South African guide told me this), but that and Zanzibar would be a cool trip.

Yes Botswana was amazing...

If possible I’d do a Chobe national park type of safari and then you’re close to Vic falls to check that off as well

We are on the fence about Zanzibar as well. Looking at doing something in the area and considering something related to Lake Victoria, Mt Kilimanjaro, or Victoria Falls.
The more I investigate “things to do” and “places to go” in Africa the less excited I get about it. Outside of the “Safari” experience I’m not sure what we want to do and see.

Look at lodges in the sabi sands- some of the best wildlife viewing in the world and private, although part of the larger Kruger National Park, so not as many people. Saw the big 5 every day I was there.

I would never in a million years go to a chain like the 4 seasons- PLENTY of luxury lodges.

Botswana is my favorite but probably too rugged for you.

Africa is a place where it still makes sense to use a travel agent as they’ll know the best deals.

The safari experience was great and almost makes whatever else you do seem inconsequential so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Africa is a nature destination no doubt about that for much of it. If you need "things to do" outside of that, that's why South Africa is the option it is.

We looked at Victoria Falls but found that flying there from certain countries was too time consuming and lacking non-stops for our trip. This may be an issue for you and help you trim your list.

ETA: We stayed in Sabi Sands as poster above has mentioned.
