I made the mistake of using advantage car rental on a trip last week...very poor service at the airport and they try and stick you with INSURANCE...would not ever use them again...EVER...They came across as a second rate car rental company...when I called priceline to complain they said they had numerous complaints about their customer at airports..

Do you have trouble setting boundaries with people? .....like saying, “no thanks”.

Out of curiosity, why would you not want insurance? The way it was explained to me my insurance agent was that while my full coverage personal insurance will cover the rental car, it will not cover the cost of the damaged rental car being out of service. That could add up quickly.

Yep. The only time I'd refuse at least basic insurance is if I used a credit card that covered me and I was 100% sure I was covered. Even in that case if I was in a foreign country I'd still get the "throw the keays at them no matter what happens" insurance.

It is usually something like $25/ day or more, it often will add 50% or up to double the cost to your car reservation.
You can buy insurance for everything.

I used them once and declined the insurance. They told me if I didn't buy it would be required to pay the full amount of the damages when I returned the car. I told them that I would be on an aircraft by the time the adjuster arrived to assess the damage. They replied that I would be detained and not allowed to leave until I settled up with them. I just smiled and told them "yeah, good luck with that". lol

Most credit cards include insurance (but check!), but that is secondary insurance, meaning that your own personal car insurance will be used first. A few high-end credit cards offer primary car insurance (Chase Sapphire cards, for example), which will cover stuff and not affect your own regular car insurance. American Express offers primary coverage at $25 per rental as an option on several of their cards, and this is what I use.
By the way, I've used Advantage and had no problem. And most car-rental locations are franchises, so your experience may differ a great deal from airport to airport.

You are likely wrong actually.
Someone side swiped a rental of mine in England, just barely denting the two drivers side lower panels beneath the doors. The damage was almost unnoticeable. I have no idea when it happened. I didn't see the damage until about an hour before I turned the car in and I was halfway expecting the check in guy to not see it.
I had a credit card with rental car coverage. I believe it was Hertz but I'd have to double check. But they had an extremely quick program that estimates the damage, took probably 3-5 minutes. They charged my credit card the estimated $1180 (which frankly seemed very low to replace 2 panels in London even on a shitty small Euro car).
My rental insurance through my Credit Card was fantastic though. Hertz emailed me their photos and estimate and I took some additional photos. I emailed the estimate from Hertz as well as the initial reservation receipt, and 30 days later I got a call that my refund was on its way.
Given that, if you do an after hours or otherwise busy rental place that doesn't check your vehicle immediately upon turn in then you are right. But they will still charge your card on file and email you the info.

I only rent with Hertz and through our CDP we get insurance included.

Get a better insurance agent. I have State Farm and get the extra “in case car is out of service” for a few bucks when I travel.
OP: ALL rental car companies try to up sell you coverage.

An excellent reason to use a Chase Sapphire reserve card if you’re a frequent traveler.
