JAPAN!!!!

I am lucky enough to work for a company with a presence in Japan and making the first trip post COVID end of the month.

After the work week I am heading to the Japanese alps near Nagano (Nozawa Onsen) to get a few turns in.

My first skiing post ACL tear too ??

Will post pics. I think my kids are still mad at me.

Kitzbuhel in Austria, Jackson Hole, and Killington, VT.

Hoping to do Palisades or Mammoth Mountain this year along with Big Sky, MT as well.

Kitzbuhel is one of my friend's childhood mountain, and I can't wait to get there after all she's said about it.

Never been to Revelstoke.
Tell us how it compares... mountain, snow, town.

Well the nearest 'city' is 2.5 hrs away in Kamloops despite this being off of Canada's main highway 1 . No way I would recommend the drive I did during a snowstorm, highway 5 from Hope to Merritt is a crazy drive. No gas stations, no towns, just wilderness for what felt like 200 miles. Current conditions are light snow and 18*F.

Heading to Big Sky this year, but I've got Telluride, Vail, and Heavenly as the next 3 major spots to hit.
Trying to get to all of the big mountains in NA.

After that: Alta/Snowbird, Beaver Creek... and I think I'll have gotten all the major ones.

Will start working my way back through all of them with the kids.
Steamboat, Whistler, Breck, Aspen, Keystone, Copper, Park City

A few other small ones we haven't been to, anyone want to point out which ones I'm missing out on by skipping?
Revelstoke, Mammoth, Solitude, Grand Targhee, Brighton, Deer Valley, Taos, Wolf Creek, Powder Mountain, Snowbasin, Sun Valley, Mt Bachelor, Durango

I’d skip the Cali side of Heavenly for a day at Kirkwood.

Any dining recommendations for Park City? Will be staying on the Canyons side but will probably make our way to Main Street once or twice for diner.

Looking for Canyons and Main St. recommendations.

TIA

Freshies for lunch and get the lobster sliders
Riverhorse on Main for a nice dinner. It’s expensive.
We liked the bridge for a casual meal
Yuki Yama is good if you want sushi

I know we're going to do Sammy's Bistro and Annex Burger. We will be setup to cook and eat in the condo for the other nights but will definitely follow along for cool recs from others.

Yeah we were there for a week and only ate out 4 times. We had a condo at the base of PC so the fam could go down easily for lunch.

I’ll have the opportunity to hit up Monarch, Wolf Creek, or Purgatory in February. Ill have time to do two of the three. Anyone have good experiences there?

I skied Purgatory when I was a kid but don’t remember much. I’ve passed by Monarch several times but never skied.

Trip review for Revelstoke while I sit here waiting on a ribeye in Sun Peaks.

Overall- Highly recommend if you are an intermediate to advanced skier that is looking for tough skiing. Downtown area is not large (say 5x8 city blocks) and it's a mix of hotels with a few restaurants and bars sprinkled throughout. It is a pain in the arse to get to given it's over 2 hrs from Kamloops and I think 3+ from Calgary, but once you're there it's perfect. I wouldn't want to drive the trans Canada highway there in a snowstorm, tons of avalanche regions on the way where the highway can shut down for a long time.

Weather- 18-30F, cloudy with light snow showers yesterday and clearer skies today.

Hotel- Stayed at the Fairfield inn. Only bad thing was it was next to the railroad tracks but I was exhausted it didn't bother me.

The mountain- Only 5 lifts at the entire mountain-2 gondolas, 3 high speed quads. No lift lines either because once you get to the top of the lifts there is so much terrain to explore.

View at the top of the spoke lift

Tons of open glades that were fun to navigate through. These were off a blue or black but not difficult

After exploring a few of the runs to the right of the spoke lift, I saw a bunch of people hiking to a bowl on the back.

Snow was super soft back here with cool rocks

Only spot I fell was at the bottom of the path leading out. Hit a little tree stump sticking out 1.5" out of the ground and it sent me flying forward

Skied the ripper lift for a little but the stoke lift had the better terrain for what I was looking for. Made my way to a new area and found this

Loved the soft snow in the steep stuff. Wrapped up my day and caught a picture of the base area here

There is a hotel here at the base, but that's it. I did notice a shuttle that took people straight to the mountain and it goes all the way through town to all the hotels. Easy way to get around without having to drive

Skied again this morning for 3 hours until my legs were tired then drove the 3 hrs to sun peaks. Staying at the sun peaks lodge and at the steakhouse downstairs. This is more of a resort town/base with more hotels and restaurants up here.

Tomorrow and Sundays forecast- Snow

Awesome review. Seems like my kinda place.
I don’t want nightlife, or bars, or shopping.
I want powder and trees and an empty mountain.
Would probably be a great guys trip next year.

Yeah it definitely fits the bill then. Was thinking it'd be a good guys trip, add in a day of snowmobiling and there's a solid trip. Every other vehicle up there was a truck loaded with a snowmobile.

Sun Peaks today was great despite extremely low visibility at the top. I'll have a longer review after I'm back, but this is a huge mountain in comparison. I hit up every spot of the mountain today and found good things in them all especially by the Morrissey lift. Groomers here are great, definitely more of a kid friendly resort with greens/blues and fewer blacks. Did a double black today and it wasn't anything crazy like at Revy
