Big Sky in March. Any tips on best place for ski rentals?

Lone Mountain Sports is where I have rented in the past, good rates and it's right at the base of the mountain.

2012-2022 Ski Thread

Whoa...a decade long thread.

Am I supposed to post memories from 2015?

Anyhoo...we will be in Red River at the end of December to risk tearing tendons and breaking bones yet again!

I picked up the full Ikon this year, Aspen and Jackson Hole are going to happen. Aspen just before Christmas and I'm planning a big roadtrip in February...Big Sky and Jackson Hole with a day at Grand Targhee and probably Red Lodge as well.

First time skiing ever. Going to Heavenly in mid January for a bachelor trip.

If its your first time Heavenly might not be the best mountain just because there is very limited green terrain. Northstar is probably your best bet for the most beginner friendly mountain at Tahoe. Not saying there aren't any easy runs at Tahoe but I could see popular blue runs like California Trail and Ridge Run being a bit too much for the absolute beginner as both runs have some steeper sections to them.

People call Northstar "Flatstar" but I like it a lot. I really like the backside and Lookout Mountain at Northstar.

However if you are going to do Heavenly I would stick to the Nevada side for the most part as I feel like the runs over there are a bit easier and they have more intermediate runs in general. Just beware of the Galaxy Run since that lift takes forever to get out of the bottom of the Galaxy Bowl.

My favorite runs at Heavenly are Ellie's, Gunbarrel, Little Dipper, Olympic Downhill, Ridge Run, California Trail, Milky Way Bowl, Stagecoach Woods, and the easier Mott runs. Never done Killebrew and not sure I ever will - scares the shite out of me since it seems like you can die on those. I'll do some of the easier Mott runs like the one that goes right under the lift.

I'll ski Christmas day and check out that night if I drive there and check out the day after if I fly. Still havent decided whether or not I will drive to Utah or fly there. Can't make up my mind. Driving will be about $300 cheaper after factoring in hotels, gas, and rent car. Flying in is more expensive just because rent car prices are high right now.

I love making laps on the NV side. Take Dipper to bomb down Dipper Bowl and Jacks followed by taking comet for moguls down Little Dipper. Rinse and repeat.

North Bowl and Boulder lifts are getting replaced next year. I guess that’s because of the parking lot, but Galaxy needs an upgrade too.

My favorite overall line at Heavenly is to take the Sky chair to Skyline Trail to Milky Way Bowl to Perimeter, but then you have to get on the Galaxy Chair which takes forever since its so slow. My arse will fall asleep on that chair.

I like lapping the Olympic Downhill run since the lines are never long at the Stagecoach Express chair. Even mid week I've seen the lines get somewhat crowded at the Dipper and Comet chairs.

Last year when I went to Tahoe I got lucky, I went to Heavenly twice, but one of the days I didn't go where I went to Kirkwood instead, the winds were too high at Heavenly and they had many chairs shut down. Glad I was at Kirkwood that day where no chairs were shut down.

That's another thing about Heavenly... lifts can and will be closed due to high winds

Go up to Tamarac Lodge on the gondola or boulder lodge, those are the most mellow areas to learn, there's short lifts with wide green runs. You won't be able to go down sky express with only 2 days to learn, but I would go up that lift for the views alone. You can see the desert in nevada while you're thick in the snow, as well as the view of the lake.

You don't think I'll be able to take Ridge run down to Maggie's into Lakeview lodge?

How steep is ridge run?

It's not too bad, a few short steep runs. But there's one long one just as you pass the top of canyon express, it turns left as you go towards powder bowl. It's wide enough for to not run out in to the trees and there's usually an ice patch there just as it turns left. Obviously, hit maggies a few times before venturing up there.

Also:
Look where you want to go, not directly in front of you
Lean forward in to your boots
Exaggerate lifting you inside heel on turns
Arms at 90deg

Ridge Run is pretty tame, its an easier blue run for sure. But you have to keep in mind its the most popular run on the California Side of the mountain so you're going to have every single level of skiier on it - from the absolute novices to the experts who whistle down it as if they were trying to qualify for the Olympic Downhill. So you'll have to navigate others on that slope unless its not a busy day.

The very end of Ridge Run has a steep section, the portion that ends at the bottom of the Caynon Express lift. This can be tricky especially for newbies since its steep and can get icy/scraped off. I've seen many people wipe out on the final stretch of the run to where many avoid it and go down Maggie's instead, just keep in mind you'll have to take another lift to get back up, and I am pretty sure the only way back to the Canyon/Sky lifts from Ridge Run is to eventually have to go down that final steep section. Same with California Trail - there is a section at the end right before the last catwalk to the Sky chair that is steeper than the rest of the trail

Not sure when I’ll be able to go due to a new contract position I’m out starting in two weeks, but Park City, Summit County, and Heavenly/Kirkwood are on the hit list and I WILL get in at least 30 days this season.
