Loveland is definitely my preferred budget ski area.

I am going to be at Park City in 9 days and am a bit worried that only 11 runs are currently open.

So am I but there's another storm this week. I think most will be open by Christmas.

Skiing crystal today and having a blast. 11" of fluffy snow overnight, no lift lines, life is good. Did Exterminator already and it was knee deep, will post some pics when I'm home
Oh and it's been snowing all day so everything that got skied out this morning is getting a nice topping

The storm coming through tomorrow into Wednesday will open more. Base of the trough is a little closer than last week, plenty of moisture coming, an what looks to be a pretty good wind direction.

Abundant moisture will come across, you can see what it's doing around Tahoe right now.

Trough marches east, best energy is going to swing over the San Juans but plenty of lift for all interests. The wind direction is pretty lame for the I70 mountains in CO, but down in the south they should do very well. The San Juans were way low on snowpack as of last week, so this is really helpful for the water situation out here.

***Just using the GFS for convenience****
I'll look more deeply into model differences tonight and start watching those high res models as they get into range.

2 hr drive to Crystal so made my way there this morning. They got 11" overnight of the light fluffy powder (it's usually thick and wet powder so this was a treat). View from parking lot at Crystal
On the second lift (Rex), met a guy from CT out on vacation so offered to show him the area. Ended up skiing the entire day with him and we had a blast. I feel like it's skiers code that if you know the mountain and someone you meet on the lift isn't from there and asks for suggestions you show em around. Turned out to be an awesome day, posting a trail map below for reference.
Started with The Doors and Sunnyside right under Rex. Easy quick feel for how nice the powder was. Definitely some tree roots, branches, trees to watch out for but very good for early season.
At this point Green Valley opened up so we headed over there and did Grubstake just under the lift. Snow was more wind blown here so we got our run in then headed back to near the Rex lift. Memorial Forest had untouched powder, as did Middle Ferks. We lapped this area about 3 times before moving to Exterminator. Steep and deep, untouched powder
By the time I got near the bottom, my legs were hurting. New ski buddy got stuck, pretty good advertising for Black Crows
Went up to top of Forest Queen to eat and take a quick break. After lunch, we knew where the good snow was under the gondola but tried to cut a little right from Exterminator and see what Bull Run had. Again more beautiful untouched snow, this area was some of the best early season skiing I've ever had. It was definitely steep but manageable
Ended our day with another run in that area down Melbys. I guess I have never skied that area much before (usually stick with Northway and Chair 6 when they're open) but I'll be exploring that area more. Perfect day. Oh, and here's the lift line view from yesterday versus zero today.

Excellent. There's more of that to come too. PNW looks to do quite well for the foreseeable future. Like even if we get a flip back to warm west/cold east (which we might come new years), the PNW should remain cold and wet.

Nice. Can’t wait to head up Friday.
You mentioned roots and such. Did you hit anything today? I am torn on taking out my early season skis vs my pride & joy moments. My moments are wider so better for this storm that I’ll probably enjoy Friday morning I’d assume. However, I don’t want any core shots. I just know my rock skis can’t handle the deep stuff. That’s what the moments are for.

Is that where the Avalanche was a couple of days ago?
Posted on 12/14/21 at 8:41 am to LSUlefty
Correct. Horrible situation but no one should’ve been in the BC at that time given conditions .

I did not, small scratch from a tree but it's just within the wax layer. I did see others clip some roots and rock edges but I'd lean towards the moments for the deeper stuff. Fri night and sat looks like a big storm

Copper was crazy this weekend. Soooo much terrain open relative to the time of year. Lapping Super Bee was a lot of fun.

You ready for the wind down in Denver? Its going to really be rocking up around Boulder.
Posted on 12/14/21 at 4:48 pm to Duke
Uhh, is it gonna be that bad? Should I put all my stuff outside in the garage?
Do you think it’ll be safe to drive to Longmont from Denver? I have to drive up in a sedan tomorrow for work.

Nice day in Snowmass, conditions are alright but could use more snow obviously. A bit thin a few areas.

I'd consider it, not sure if it gets that high in Denver proper but closer to the terrain, higher it'll be.

Probably, don't know the drive well enough to fully say. A cross wind is going to be no fun.

Also, Ts and Ps to anyone flying through DEN tomorrow.
ETA: SLC got some thundersnow tonight with the low pressure passage very close by. That's convection and that's beautiful for snowfall. Park City and the surrounding areas should do quite well.
Should get a nice pop of snow in the morning through Colorado too. Ahead of those damaging winds across the front range.

What are you expecting next week for Christmas in Park City? I'm skiing Christmas Eve for sure. I don't trust the Weather Channel.

I'll be in Park City Tomorrow-Sunday, I'll report back on the snow but they're supposed to get some over the next couple of days. Saturday/Sunday are ooking like bluebird days though.
