How do you guys go on so many damn trips each season? Do you live in driving distance? I'm jealous and lucky to get in one.

I wish I could drive to more places, my brother and I did drive to Montana in December. Otherwise I can fly direct into Denver, working as a RN I have 5 days off at times and I am single so I can sometimes squeeze a last minute trip in if I find a deal on a flight. The Ikon pass helps a lot as well with keeping costs down.

I still have one more big trip planned, my goal was to ski 20 days this year and it is going to be close.

This past year was my first trip in 10 years. I decided that I will have to go somewhere, even if it's fricking Ober Gatlinburg, every year. Every other year we will do a big ski vacation as a family and alternate with something tropical, because that's what the wife loves. So next year I'm going to do something more budget friendly. So, we did Park City a couple weeks ago, will decide over the next few months where I'm going to go, possibly solo. I don't really have any close friends that ski/board.

The idea of a solo ski trip sounds amazing. I love skiing with my kids and family but for different reasons than skiing by myself. Linking up with some cool, random people of a similar skiing ability can be a great time.

There are some great places that can be done on a budget especially if you don’t mind dirt-balling it a little bit. If you find yourself in Summit Co, hit me up, but hopefully you won’t be on the usual path when you are solo

I met a guy on the ride up the Christie Peak Express in Steamboat last year from Houston who does has been doing one a year for the past 25 years. He looked about 65. He said he was going to continue the annual solo trip as long as he was healthy enough to do it.

He mainly skied blacks.

I’ve done several solo trips as well over the years and have a great time. I love riding with my kid but he is still not great with powder, blacks/double blacks and forget about hike to terrain. Solo trips allow me to do those things without having to deal with the cost/time throwing him in ski school.

I wasn't sure how I would like it first since I've only ever skied with friends and family but it has been great. Can do what you want and the singles line can be a nice perk as well on a busy day. I will probably continue to take 1 or 2 solo trips a year now.

Does anyone have any experience with the IndyPass? Seems like a poor man's version of the Mountain Collective. Thinking about getting it since I have four mountains within a 3 hour drive from where I'm living. I'll supplement that with a night pass at my local hill.

Edit: Seems like IndyPass would be the perfect pass for New England. It even includes Jay Peak.

High school counselor: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Me: {Holds up this guy’s picture}

My day at A Basin was a pretty big disappointment. The snow was in spring mode but whatever. The mountain itself and setup is fantastic. I doubt there is a better view in CO. But for a place that has a reputation of tough terrain, the amount of shitty skiers and iced spots from people sliding was crazy. I was hit while pulling my kid on a flat spot by some gapper. They were everywhere. I’m sure that place is amazing when things are right but initial thought: WP>>>>AB.

It's the best way to do it, in my opinion. My style of skiing is I am on the first chair up, and am also on the last chair up. I ski open to close, and don't take any breaks to eat. My rest is my chairlift time. So skiing in groups sucks, because you have people that can't keep up, want to take constant breaks, don't want to go down black runs or bump runs, get lost, and so on. When you ski solo you can do what you want, when you want and answer to no one but yourself.

I've already taken 2 solo ski trips this season, about to take a 3rd this upcoming week at Vail. I went to Vail over Christmas, but almost the entire back bowls were closed, only a handful of runs in the Sun Up/Sun Down bowl were open. Not just that but Blue Ox, Highline and Roger's Run were closed too. I am going to go back this week and focus on the Back Bowls.

I went to Tahoe a few weeks ago solo and did Heavenly twice, Northstar, and Kirkwood. According to my EpicMix, I was averaging about 23 lifts a day. I got 25 lifts in at Northstar, but to be fair I went on a Tuesday and closed roads/bad weather kept most people away so the lift lines were almost non existant. You can't come anywhere close to that many lifts in a day skiing in a group.

My first ever ski trip was Jan '06. This is the first season I have not skied since then due to being overseas working.

Since then I've made about 22 ski trips and 14-15 were solo. I usually go to Tahoe (18 times) because there's a lot to do at night (casinos, nightlife, etc.).

I often find someone to share some runs with for a day or two here and there, but it's awesome being able to go at my pace and take the runs I want to take every time.

It's killing me not skiing this season. I plan on being a ski bum next season and want to get in 30+ days on the slopes.

ETA: Agree with Goldennugget entirely. I'm not first chair (see aforementioined nightlife), but I'm early and always ski to last chair, ski fast, and only take one break for a quick bite, hydrate, and eliminate.

My 4th and final trip of the season is coming up to Park City March 12-19. It looks like the conditions by the time we get there may be garbage. Looks like next week could get pretty hot and dry? Some of the forecasts are showing daily lows of 37F at the peak

Where do you find the energy to ski all fricking day? I’m assuming you’re not in your mid 40’s like me.

In college and in my 20’s, I was all about the first chair....but I took lunch breaks for a beer and burger.

Keep it light at lunch and save the beer for the hot tub after the lifts close. Get a good night sleep. Hit the stairmaster for like a month before.

I was going through my Epic Mix app last night and discovered that it tracked my lifts ride and vertical feet. Pretty damn cool. But is there an app that I can use for any resort not just Epic. One that I could import/manually create my data from my last trip so I can keep a historical record of all my trips? I know there are a few but wasn’t sure if any did the import or which one was best. Any that track what runs you do?

I don’t track any vertical feet, runs, speed, et alia. I’m not into the statistics or gadgetry of riding. I don’t ride with music and only look at my phone on breaks. I hardly even take pictures anymore.

I’m in this for altered states of consciousness -getting into and remaining in ‘the zone’ as quickly and as long as possible.

I think the gadgets and statistics and keeping score of it all interferes with the flow of my riding so Ive stripped as much of them away as possible.

I’m sure there’s a few apps out there for what you want but the others here most likely have better recommendations than I would.
