I just quit using YouTube.
I'm not going to pay a subscription or watch a two minute add to watch random 30 second clips. And I'm certainly not going to pay YouTube to watch content they don't pay for.
I did start paying other services. For example: Why pay YouTube to watch CRTV shows, when they don't pay the guys I watch. I'll just pay CRTV.

Only if you don't know how to get past them.
When it comes to youtube, don't use the official yt app. Use YouTube vanced. It's far better.
You can't get it from the play store. Just Google it and follow instructions. It does not require root.
It is ad free, and allows playback while your phone is asleep for when you are just listening to tunes. It also allows you to sign in under your regular yt account info.
