I have an Alexa and used to have a google at my house, its in my kitchen which walks out to my patio. For the life of me there are no outdoor rated speakers? Why would this be? I'm just talking about something that plugs in that can take exterior humidy, light rain, etc.

Or hell even a bluetooth battery operated one?

Keep in mind that if you have an outdoor speaker that is accessible to Google or Alexa then so do your neighbors.

Wouldn't this be the case for indoor speakers within bluetooth range also? That's a fair point, but I wouldn't be concerned. I just don't really understand why there's not really marketed options.

JBL and Harman Kardon both have good quality / reasonably priced ones.

What? Theyre not Bluetooth. Most are securely mounted to a subnet and possibly a user account.
Not sure what you’re insinuating but by that measure anything outside is your neighbor’s.
To answer OP, there is no specific need. If you have an airplay2 hub or even an old echo dot with aux output, get a cheap amp and wire your speakers. WiFi devices are meant to be stationary. Nobody is going to build a device that is “portable as long as it stays on the same WiFi network” Bluetooth is for carrying with you and there are a million water resistant Bluetooth speakers.

I could be wrong but I think that poster means that anything you can do by voice then your neighbors could as well. Control stuff, order stuff, access your data, etc.

Anyone can tell my speakers to play music, and they will.

That’s a good point but I don’t know anyone who allows voice purchases. We have same-account Alexa devices in multiple family members’ homes and while there are some late-night announcement mishaps, the pros outweigh the cons by far, especially being able to check in on the elders in when their phones are dead or out of reach. Alexa, by default will not control locks or garage doors and requires some knowledge to even be annoying. We have a private AI agent connected to Alexa via a private skill that, in theory could tell anyone anything that has ever happened here. That doesn’t worry me one bit.
I guess our back yard area that we use really only only has one neighbor that isn’t 100% isolated as I can see their roof, but having an outdoor Alexa device doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me, just the portable WiFi speaker idea is extremely niche and I can’t see that being a successful product.

Sonos gives you the option of their voice control which just covers music access or Alexa.

Got it. It’s probably Amazon won’t certify anything marketed for outdoor use for reasons above.
They are super secure about everything except things that make them money like voice ordering which is still easy enough to block. Getting it to control my garage was a hack. Huge Alexa fan though. You can get the full version of the echo half price ($50 instead of $100) a few times a year. Pick up a couple of those and if they last half as long outside, you’re still good.

yep! same; i tricked it to voice control my cheapo $25 meross garage door controller.

i'm not worried; i created custom commands that nobody would randomly stumble on if they were standing outside my door screaming at alexa.

also, i've weaned myself off alexa dots for the most part except one in the bar area because its so much easier to control the sonos in that room since the speakers are too high up to pause or turn volume up or down.

i still love the alexa app; i use it as a hub for my growing HA collection after having done a major purge when i left my hubitat behind years ago.

There are only about Eleventy Billion IP67 rated Bluetooth speakers on Amazon.

We have a fireTV outside with BT connectivity. I was able to connect the BT enabled AM/FM radio in our spa to the FireTV via blue tooth. It works like a charm.

You could always look for Marine rated outdoor speakers an connect them to a BT module.

Dots are junky but the “full” echos or echo studios are not bad. $50 is an absolute steal for a “full” echo when they’re on sale. All the whole home audio you need. If you’re 20 beers deep and just have to jam hard, I built my own portable for that. It weighs like 50# but has a handle and batteries last way longer than I ever expected, just 200Wh LFP will rock really hard for 12+ hours with an efficient setup.
