This is mainly for us to do a little word processing or browsing at home, so It doesn't need to be fancy at all. I want a cheap one because my kids are hard on laptops and it's not worth getting an expensive one to me.

If all you are doing is browsing the web and writing Word docs, any of them will do. Considering that price is your main interest, I would go with the top one (but note that it doesn't have a CD/DVD player).

Given those are the only 3 in the world to choose from? The one with the a6 and the touch screen.

None of the above. Get Asus.

And HP should be dead last.

If I were you I'd want something more along the lines of a tablet. Less pieces to break from unruly children.

And, while we're at it, why does everyone hate HP so much these days? I've been out of the PC game for quite some time, but I feel like they were respectable when I left. Did something change? Or were they always crappy in comparison to other brands? And, how so?

My HP dm4 has been going pretty strong for the past 4 years. It recently decided to stop reading the battery, so it has to stay plugged in, but whatever, it's 4 years old.

I bought an inexpensive laptop -Gateway NE56R34u ..15.67 screen, $ 199 (Xmas season price) at Microcenter 4GB or DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HD, HDMI, CD/DVD,..Win 8, great laptop for the price...but I will definitely look for WiDi next time so I can send programs to my TV

BTW your # 1 looks best..no CD/DVD - warning.!!

I"ve burned two of them up. Overheats like hell. Cheaply made. Supposedly has a 25% failure rate.

When I worked at Sprint as a contractor I went through 3 HP laptops in 18 months. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as usage, just junk computers. One actually started smoking while sitting on our table during a conference call with roughly 20 other people sitting around it. I hate HP. We use Dells where I am now. Not much better but it has yet to catch fire or have a melt down.

HP and Dell aren't really any different IMO in regards to a corporate environment. Especially in global companies where you basically have a service deal with one or the other.

I love HP. None of your major manufacturers make much of anything proprietary other than cases and batteries nowadays. Everyone uses Foxconn motherboards, RAM from one of about six manufacturers, one of about four hard drives, one of two GPUs (if not integrated from one of 2 brands of CPUs).
The stamp on the case buys some amount of support. There's not a company that doesn't honor their warranties, so they're all the same to me. And warranty services are equally annoying across all major manufacturers as well. You'll spend lots of time on the phone with someone who barely speaks English, get the same advice, then get the same replacement part at no cost eventually. In the end, laptops are the sum of all the major components available across all the manufacturers plus how protective or stylish the case is vs cost.

No. The Celeron N2807 is dual-core, and the E2-3800 is a quad-core. The HP's A6-5200 is also quad-core

In case anyone wanted confirmation, A6-5200 > E2-3800 > Celeron N2807
