I've been using an archer c7 for the last 7 years and it's starting to require restarts and being a little more spotty. I have metronet gig service and 2500 sqft to cover, although that sqft is split over two stories. Wired backhauling or adding Ethernet to my entire house is not a great option for me so I was looking at a mesh system. Prime day has the deco xe75 2 pack for $209. I was thinking a tri band would help with wireless backhauling. Am I on the right track or could I go with a cheaper model or less access points?

lightyears better than my eeros were..Phone app is hit or miss, but these are essentially set it and forget..I have (5) in my house, for sure overkill, but two are hardwired and you can adjust how they feed the others

I installed about a month ago a Deco S4 3 pack that cost $100 from Amazon. It's in a 2,500 sq. ft. single story house. 1 unit connects via WiFi and the other Deco is connected with an ethernet cable as is the TV. They feed into a Netgear switch. It works perfectly fine for my needs and it has been set it and forget it.

I guess my question is does wifi 6, 6e, or the 6ghz band worth the extra expense ($100) to improve performance?

I use the 6 for the backhaul

I don't know enough about the advantages and others here would no doubt know. A side-by-side comparison with 2.4 and 5 ghz bands would be helpful. I set mine up at 2.4, since the HVAC thermostat operates at that level.

I have two that are wired to the main and two that are on wireless backhaul from them on the 6GHz...its that easy to do with these

2.4 = good distance, limited speed

5 = limited distance, good speed

6 = seemingly good distance, ridiculous speed, very few things using 6E, so its a great way to connect the decos to each other and create a true "mesh"

Not to any one in particular, but most of these mesh system require a separate power connection, right? No POE? Do the POE models work well?

If your "satellite" units are powered via PoE (and hence wired data), then it's not a "mesh", it's just a standard WiFi installation with multiple wired access points. That would be preferred.

Some of the systems marketed as "mesh" allow wired backhaul, though I'm not sure if any can also be powered via PoE. Still better to run a wire in any case.

If you want APs powered via PoE, just get something like UniFi or competing brands like TP-Link or whatever. In UniFi's case, at least, the standard setup is a router appliance which runs network controller software, and may or may not have a PoE switch built in, and you can install as many wired APs as you need. And all of their APs are "mesh-capable", which I think UniFi calls "wireless uplink".

Thanks for this. I was misremembering some of your last recommendations when I made that post. I was thinking the consensus was wired mesh units were preferred, and that was wrong. It was that wired APs can be just as good or better if properly controlled. Glad I didn’t spring for the mesh on Prime Day.
