IMO, smart thermostats with a sensor are required for two story houses.
The thermostat at the top landing causes so many issues when room doors are closed. The sensor fixes that issue.

Check your utility website for rebates on the smart thermostats. Might get one paid in full by rebate.

Love my Nest, got a 3rd gen last year and a $50 rebate with my local utility company.

I've got a 3rd gen Nest downstairs and a 4th gen Ecobee upstairs.
Hardware wise the Nest just looks nicer with the metal ring which is available in different options. Also, it's easier and quicker to change the temperature with the Nest because of that ring than the Ecobee. Though it looks like the newest model has no metal but still looks nicer imo.
Changing the temp on the Ecobee can be frustrating sometimes. When you lift your finger off the display, temp will change from what you thought you had it at.
Another feature I like is that you can customize the Nest display. I have mine to show the weather and temp outside. This is useful as we walk by it get to the garage or front door.
The Nest's advantage is its learning capability but I wound up not using it. I prefer manually setting a schedule by day.
From a software perspective, I like the UI of the Ecobee mobile app better. It's easier to setup and change schedules. You can define settings like Sleep1, Sleep2 etc and assign a temperature to it and use those to build a schedule. You can then later change the temperature of the setting and it gets updated in all the schedules. There is no equivalent of this in the Nest software.

quote:Wyze is about release theirs. They make solid stuff, with one app to control everything. I've been very impressed with all of their products so far.
What's the go-to wifi connected thermostat these days?

I just installed five Honeywell T6s. They work great and the app is pretty much idiot proof.

My AC guy owner said go with Honeywell, the younger technician said the nest was fine.

I just received my pre-order the other day. I haven't installed it yet because for now my Nest is working. When the pre-orders started I was on my 3rd Nest as it seemed like they were all having a battery issue which causes the wifi not to work at all. Of course since I pre-ordered the Wyze one my Nest has worked flawlessly. I'm probably going to swap it out in the next few days just to check it out and see how it stacks up to the Nest.

I have two Emerson Sensi wifi/smart thermostats that I really like. Can control them via the Sensi app and Alexa (and also the Alexa app). They are simple, easy to use, and have been reliable thus far. This is what my models look like:
