I've only owned the cheapies and they crap out in about 2-3 years.

They are on the cheaper end. I bought a cheap Acer laptop years ago from Walmart that lasted for several years.

The string is too short on the new laptops, and they are too light to hold the boat still for fishing.

Avoid them if possible. If it is what you can afford, go for it.

Just like any other windows laptop manufacturer, they have their good and their bad. The budget models will be mostly bad, but their upper end models will be mostly good

I've had a mid-tier ($600) Acer for about 4 and a half years, and it's still my daily knockaround laptop. Literally knockaround, because I'm not careful with it. The components are of course as good as any other laptop with the same general specs. The shell is all plastic, a few screws and snap-together frames. There's one benefit to this -- replacement components are cheap. I've replaced the monitor and a hinge so far, just from physical abuse.
That's kind of been my electronics-buying MO over the past few years: buy whatever has a billion replacement parts available on eBay.

Acer and HP are Garbagio. I only purchase Dell, Lenovo, and MSI laptops for my company.

HP makes some fantastic business class laptops

I used to order a lot of HP business class laptops. They were pretty good for the most part, but I had quite a few HP's with failed wireless adapter and motherboard issues. There was one model that consistently had touchpads fail.
I still have a few HP's in my inventory. I haven't ordered any in 2 years so they may have improved since then. I refuse to order printers from HP. Worst printers on the planet.

Ugh. We use them for work and all of them end up with swelling batteries. I have to get mine switched out about every 6 months.
We have 3 of the Acer Nitro laptops that the kids have been using for some gaming but mostly school work. They've been great.

I had Thinkpad T420 for 10 years now. Worth the money I paid for it.
Only replaced battery once. Best laptop I ever owned. Will be sad when I let her go
