What is the future of Windows?

Microsoft has not come up with a new version of Windows in almost 6 years. There is no new OS being developed in the pipeline. I hear that support will end in 2025. What is the future of Windows. Would we all have to shift to Mac OS or Linux?

Windows 10 is a great operating system. It's been fine tuned for a long time now.

They'll likely just add some more features and reskin 10 for their next OS update

Microsoft stated they don't want there to be a next version of Windows.
They built Windows 10 in such a way that they can just keep updating it for a long time.
It's Windows As A Service now. Probably only a matter of time before they make it a Subscription just like Office 365.
Hell they may just give it away for free and have subscriptions for support as the Desktop OS is not where the big money is.

This is where I think they end up. You can already use Windows 10 Home without registering it, as long as you are ok with a watermark on your desktop. In the near to mid future, I see Microsoft giving out their home OS for free as long as you are willing to opt into data collection, and then make all of their money on enterprise.

I think this language is currently just for contractual purposes. They floated a trial balloon that Windows 10 would be "Windows forever" - but to support their business, they will have to come up with a subscription service to support it.
So, barring some significant change to the way PCs and most Windows oriented servers are designed/built, that's what I expect - some subscription service - perhaps with tiers (Critical updates/email support only and perhaps a more premium support tier for power users and a top tier for Enterprise support).
Unless I'm missing something in MS literature that suggests otherwise, that's where I see it going.

This can be said across all Windows 10 versions. You will be limited to settings changes though (like not being able to change your background)

Not sure but the present is weekly updates that frick something up followed by a hotfix the next day or two. I still really like 10.

Within 10 years the Windows GUI will be running on top of Linux. Azure is already running on Linux. Edge is running on open source Chromium. The writing in on the wall.

New Windows = new glitches.

Windows 10 is the best OS at the moment, and I don't think it will vanish. And even though there are no plans for Windows 11, Microsoft updates Windows 10 very frequently.

Windows 10 has had about 12 major updates. Only the last four or six or still supported. OP living under a rock? Windows 10 20H2 is the current version, they just stopped renaming each iteration.

I see nothing ridiculous about that. Windows 10 is a superior OS to anything out there.
And I like Macs and Chromebooks.

The one thing windows is good is legacy support. They won't drop that. No money to be made in operating systems. But they want people in their ecosystem.

You fell on your head? You think a billion dollar company is just gonna say, "Eh, we've had enough". Windows 10 is constantly rolling out new versions of 10. That's why you don't see the big service packs anymore. It's just a constant update.

I have read that as the solar panel technology advances we will get to the point that there might be transparent glass or film that can absorb the energy as solar panels do, but you can see right through it. By doing this glass panel building could become energy self sufficient.
oohh........ windows.... got it.
