Needs to handle regular and USB C as I still have stuff (right, Plantronics?) that still has to be charged by the older stuff.

Why is "best" important for this task?

All it's doing is converting 12v DC to 5v DC. It's not that complicated of a task.

I bought this one a couple months ago and works great. It supports 60w PD and can get a decent charge in 10-15 mins. I wouldn't buy anything that doesn't support PD spec (Power Delivery). The higher wattage it's rated the faster it can charge assuming your device supports it.

If you want to use non USB C, get a USB C to USB adapter that plugs into the charger.

You need to look at amps and not just watts. Amps is what regulates how fast your device can be charged.

W=V*A

The voltage won't change, it's all going to be in 5V output; so, if you are looking at watts, you are also looking at amps and vice versa.

I have an Anker. It's well made, unlike others that fell apart over time. I know they make some with USB C and A.

These are essentially the same thing considering voltage is constant.

I’m a big fan of Anker for chargers

rf interference from cheap electronics

It can interfere with a car's ECM. Caused all manner of error codes to suddenly show. Been there done that and stopped with a name brand charger.

How much FR interference could a 12v to 5v buck converter cause? To me it sounds more like a loose ground connection somewhere in the circuit board. I've had dozens of voltage converters over the years and never heard this problem. Heck, most car manufactures put these in their cars on their own (albeit at too few amps to be really useful)

Here you go: This Adapter Will Destroy Your Car

Maybe it was coincidence but I had a similar experience with a cheap extra and engine codes on a road trip.

Not true anymore. USB Power Delivery spec goes up to 20V and up to 5 Amps (100W).
The PD will negotiate Voltage and current, with the cable being part of the negotiation.

Yep. I've bought a couple new chargers this year that support PD. I had to buy new USB-C cables rated to support the higher wattage.

Fyi latest PD spec can go up to 48V @ 5A; so 240W charging is possible.

Also, many new laptops these days can only be charged by USB-C PD. I bought a new laptop (Framework) this summer and work sent me a new Dell couple weeks ago. Neither one has the barrel port for power; only USB-C.
