re: Ugly Data For Apple Shows How Desperately It Needs iPhone 6 To Be A Hit

A market with a 1.5-4 year upgrade cycle is fickle. Apple has fallen behind in screen size, they are desperate for the 6 to be a hit, but it will be a hit and right the ship for now. People are leery of Google because Google's business model involves people trusting someone that sees them as a commodity to sell to others. It really wouldn't take much of an incident to shift marketshare back the other way. That being said, I really think Apple is going to have to play the privacy card in the next generation or 2, because I don't think they have a prayer of beating Google in the data mining and information delivery game.
Good analysis.
Apple is having some trouble.
a) emerging markets aren't going with apple due to cost
b) the quality of iphones and ipads are better than the cheap android phones and tablets. they last longer and don't need replacement as frequently, especially true with tablets
c) consumers are keeping their phones for longer. I work closely with a mobile start up and the ceo and CTO said it doesn't matter what the iphone 6 has, they are sticking with their 5s.

Ridiculous to say they are "desperate".
Not that it matters because all production signs indicate it will be anyway.

quote:Nope, I don't believe that at all. What I believe is that Apple is worried about these trends, and rightfully so.
It seems you believe that since iPhone is losing market share then that also means iPhone sales are down YoY

Ridiculous to say they aren't desperate for every new iPhone model to be a hit. iPods are a dying market, iPad growth is slowing, the desktop is dying, how is Apple not desperate for the iPhone to be a hit? Just because it's got a gazillion dollars in the bank?

Ludicrous.
Besides, seems to me that android manufacturers are the ones desperate for it to not be a hit. If larger size phones are such a target market Apple is missing that's soon to come to end.
How did Samsung's P & L statement look last Q?
ETA: "Desperation" somehow implies Apple is struggling and needs the iPhone to be a hit to save it from floundering. Not that they aren't hoping it is a hit.

quote:Why is it ridiculous? Is it not conceivable that more than a few people at Apple feel a sense of desperation? Not that the company is going to go under, obviously, but over the thought that the iPhone isn't what it used to be?
So Apple is "desperate". You think that's not misleading? It's ridiculous.
quote:Every single high-end Android phone sold, every single one you see, is a source of data that Apple is losing money. Every single high-end Android sold is pretty much a direct lost sale by Apple. Missed revenue is losing money. And now 80-something percent of new customers have an upgrade path to the high-end that favors Android.
You haven't pointed to a single source of data that suggests Apple is losing money due to Android growing market share.
It is definitely worrying for Apple.

Ludicrous.
I think it's more ridiculous than ludicrous, but ludicrous will work. I'm not an android fanboy, I'm platform agnostic and I own an iPhone, but it's silly to think that any company isn't desperate for their flagship product to be a hit, especially as the markets for their secondary products decline.

What exactly do you think happens if the iPhone fails and fades into obscurity? Every product they make other than the Apple TV and the niche mac pros are pretty much dependent on the iPhone to lead the way. Could Apple survive if they had to go back to niche box maker? Sure, but they've risen to the top of the tech world, I would assume they are very much desperate not to go back down. The stakes are higher and losses are bigger now.

I'm sure Apple would love to own the entire market for high end phones--if it could make as large a profit.
It's current sales are UP, even with the 6 only weeks away. So to say the iPhone isn't what it used to be is weak sauce.

Once again you haven;t shown a single source that says Apple is losing money due to increasing Android share.
The evidence of increased sales in light of android's increased share inarguably shows that Apple's sales strategy of increasing its market in High margin sales and abandoning low making bottom feeder sales is working just fine.
So now Apple aims to strike at the heart of its only competition where it isn't as competitive -larger hand sets.
Seems to me the concern for the success of the 6 is much larger for the competition than it is for Apple.

Sure, just let me pop on over to the alternate universe where Android isn't taking market share from Apple so we can know how much they could be making.
Do you have a source proving how dense you are not?

do you realize how you sound?
a year ago every apple fan boy on this board was saying how apple's phone screen size was the envy of every other phone maker and they had no interest in making a bigger screen because those phones look stupid and don't fit in your pocket and the stupid android users could have their phablets and any screen that was bigger than what your thumb could reach was utterly stupid.
next it was 'apple's keyboard is the best' so why would they allow a swipe-based keyboard alternative?
same with 'apple's $700 phones don't need to be cheaper because...the poors'.
then..as soon as apple embraces these (and these are just 2 examples of like 50 leven billion) everyone is like APPLE IS FIXING THEIR ONLY PROBLEM EVER!!! THE SCREEN SIZE!!!!!

I'm "not dense" enough to know Apple is not desperate
The title of this thread is Apple is "desperate" for the 6 to be a hit.

EVERY business is ALWAYS desperate for that next sale. That's how you stay in business.
This article is about how desperate Apple is for their next round of sales.
You can keep arguing over semantics if you want, though.

truly one of the most hilarious rationalizations of apple fan boys
August 2013: "Androids are too big, not sure why anyone would want one of those - cant fit it in my pocket, derp derp"
August 2014: "Cant wait until the Iphone 6 comes out, this larger screen is going to be the bomb, not android has nothing over apple, hehe"

Here's some wild shite I read on a website, full of actual facts:
Some people actually like iOS as a mobile OS.
Its fricking crazy, I know.
Here's more:
Some people actually like Android as a mobile OS.
Believe me, it's difficult to grasp. It is quite the conundrum.
Those people listed above, in either group of OS users, could quite literally not give one single fricking shite about the others' "market share" or how many damn phones they sold. It amazes me people argue to no end, as if this will sway someone into switching one way or the other.
You are happy with your iPhone running iOS?
That is just swell.
You are happy with your (insert random 3 capital letters followed by a digit and one more random letter) running Android?
That is just swell.

None of that is at all on topic. If you are tired of these discussions, it would be just swell if you wouldn't post in these threads.
If, instead, you would actually like to contribute something meaningful, consider the implications of market share trends and respond appropriately.

I never said that. and so what if many did?
This thread is about "desperation" on Apple's part when there clearly isn't any. A desire to grow into other markets hardly translates to desperation and to say it is is retarded.
Some of you are reacting like you're worried about Apple making in roads with a larger handset-& are desperate for the 6 to be a flop.
If it sells well it will be at the expense of High end android competitors-many of whom are already struggling with profits.
If it doesn't it isn't going to make much difference to Apple as it will continue to rake in enormous profits.
Like I said current iPhone sales are off the hook--despite only having one screen size and despite it being well known that not only is the 6 coming within weeks, but so is a larger one.
You Android fan bois can see the handwriting on the wall.
More iPhone sales.
Apple made a slightly "cheaper" phone--the 5C--people laughed when they announced it cause they swore up and down it wasn't cheap enough and Apple had screwed the pooch.
Now of course it's a best seller with high profit margins.
Android makers only wish they could be as "desperate" as Apple is.

See?
If this is the type of shite you care about when choosing between Android or iPhone, you're doing it wrong.

Well, he has a point. Y'all are arguing with someone who's clearly just a fan of Apple, and that's having a much bigger impact on the discussion than it should. Likewise, there are pure Android fans on the other side and it's creating a perception of bias and inciting defensiveness, when all this really had to be was a discussion of market performance with data that already exists.
