TV experts, will be needing a new TV. Few questions for one in a moderately bright room...

TV in living room I freaking out on a more consistent basis and now my bedroom tv is losing its mind too. Both are probably 8-10yrs old. Time to upgrade one of them per the wife.
Anyways... my living room is sort of bright during the day. I have a couple windows with blinds on the wall that the tv faces. It only gets sun there around 2-6 in the afternoon. In the summer I have a 6x6 window that faces the street that gets sun in the afternoon as well, but it has blinds too. My current LG has some issues with glare, but I don’t know if that’s cause the TV tech is so old in it.

I’ve done some research and it looks like the OLEDs aren’t recommended for bright rooms or at least really bright rooms and the LED/LCDs are. I’d like to go OLED, but I’m not sure if I shouldn’t go the other route. Any ideas on to which way to go?

These are the 2 I’m looking at. Both are approximately the same price.

I know I can get cheaper TVs in the TCL and the Vizio, but I think I’m leaning towards these 2.

I have the same decision to make soon, so interested in the replies.

I will point out the 2017 lg oleds we're released at the end of February last year. May see a price drop in 17s or enough improvements in 18s to buy the new model.

I’m not paying 3k for a tv, but the LG I listed is about $1600. I can definitely do that. I’ve been pushing this off, but when the wife says it’s time... I need to take advantage... her only request is that it doesn’t cost more than 2k.

I have a 65 LG oled e7 that I picked up from frys for 2099. If you are in the market for an oled and there is a frys in your area go to the store and negotiate with them.

You can get them down to black Friday prices or lower if your are persistent.

This is unfortunately an in store only thing, doesn't work on the website.

Eta. I originally bought a b7 from Costco but I did a little research and discovered this frys trick.

I have two of the Sonys you are considering - one is a 55" and one a 65"...Incredible TV's. My other flat panels are all LGs not their OLED offerings, but quality LED sets. I prefer the Sony interface, and to me the picture quality is better (this is a personal thing). I think best blacks in the business, again this is my eye. I will say the same as others around here - check them both out in person. I hate the LG motion remote and the LG interface in general, but rarely have to use the actual TV remote, so not that big of a deal.

Yeh... will do that. Just hate looking at them at a place like Best Buy... bright arse lights in the store etc...

I mainly watch sports... football, baseball and soccer. Also watch a good bit of Netflix and Amazon prime stuff and occasional movies. Both TVs rate really well on all those... the edge in blacks apparently goes to OLED (b/c they literally turn off the black areas from what I read). And they are supposed to be close on sports with a slight edge to OLED again... just what I’ve read. My TVs are old... anything will be an upgrade on that end.

I have the LG OLED and also have the Sony XBRX900E. Both are great TVs and the OLED is fine in a bright room. Your wife isn't going to be watching 4k during the day anyway and you can always adjust the brightness depending on your room.

We have similar viewing habits, it sounds like, and I can tell you the Sony kills it on sports. In addition to football and baseball, I watch a ton of tennis, and my Sonys really shine in this arena - I mention tennis as it is obviously a sport subject to quite a bit of motion artifact.

I actually don't use the native "smart apps" for my streaming, I use a ROKU ultra and DirecTV for my sources. Haven't jumped on the Genie2 yet so no experience with DirecTV 4K content yet, but Ultra HD 4K on both VUDU and Netflix is superb on the Sony sets.

She better be working...

The comment about the bright room is what I wondering about... real life account. Definitely concerned about the sports deal though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression TV manufacturers had mostly corrected a lot of the glare issues with TVs in recent years, especially since moving away from plasma screens. If that's actually the concern. I know I agonized over that when I bought our living room TV 9 years ago, and opted against the plasma I REALLY wanted.

It's probably time to update mine as well. It's started acting a little wonky. Cutting itself off and on, losing HDMI signal on every HDMI input from time to time, etc.

Glare was a big concern... just from what I read the OLEDs were supposed to be not as bright especially the earlier models. That one I posted is supposed to be relatively bright and better for bright rooms.

Papi... you have any issues with viewing angle on the Sony?

In a bright living room I might consider an IPS panel, it will definitely help with viewing angles. Just make sure the backlight bleed isnt bad.

No, but both rooms where the Sony sets are are relatively narrow, so there isn't really a bad viewing angle spot in either room. I really enjoy the Sonys, and will say that I was honestly considering the Sony XBR-65A1E for the and balked on spending the extra $$.

The Sony picture just suits me a little better, I know there are those that prefer LG, and those that perefer Samsung, et. al., but the higher end Sony sets really work for my eyes - and they look as good as anything out there hanging on the wall too.

Unless you are just a fan of the Samsung super bright picture...there is not a reason to not purchase an LG or Sony Oled. It's the best main stream tv tech out there right now.

I bought the LG OLED 65C7 a few weeks ago and it is in a room facing a wall of windows so brightness/glare was a large concern for me too. It’s just like with any screen, I sometimes have to lower the blinds if the sun is directly shining through. Otherwise, I have it slightly tilted on a wall mount which seems to mitigate any glare. All I can say is, the OLED is the best picture quality I’ve ever seen and I don’t think the differences in OLED, LED etc will matter enough

Buy the 900e NOT the 930e. There is literally nothing that justifies the huge price difference between the two. When they first came out, SONY promised 930e buyers they would support Dolby vision (huge selling point for future proofing), well just recently they basically said, "nevermind!" The 900e was probably 2017s most successful and raved about TV.
