TV at Tailgate: HDMI / Lightning Adapter Issue

I've used, couple years back, this set up to stream (w/ an unlimited data plan) from my phone to the TV at our tailgate. Worked fine. Trying to set that up for this year and it will not allow me to stream Hulu or ESPN app. I've read something was done to the software to prevent people form stealing movies etc. Anyone have any ideas / success solving this issue? Photo of the adapter below:

You may need the official Apple version of the adapter.

Did you have buffering issues? I have an unlimited plan and can barely use my phone at our tailgate. Streaming is not even a question. Assuming you are talking about LSU.

Yes, the last time I used this setup was the year before COVID and it worked perfectly fine. I'm testing it at home for the season and, for example, I can play a video from Youtube but cannot play anything from Hulu or ESPN+. I can get the home screen for both to show up on the TV but cannot play any live action or videos. From what I can gather companies like Hulu etc. have had people ripping them off using this set up and have controls in place to prevent it. Sucks because I pay for Hulu and I pay for my unlimited date plan on my phone, I'm not ripping anybody off.

Yes, the streaming companies have been tightening the screws for months.
Try to AirPlay to your TV. If it's less than four or five years old, you probably can. For example, I can stream podcasts from my phone to my TV, and have done it (late last year) while trying to watch Yellowstone to project video from my phone to someone's TV.
However, prepare for randomized pain from Hulu, because they can turn the screws tighter whenever they want. Your TV could work on Friday, and by Saturday, you may start getting the dreaded UNK13 error code.
Get a Roku stick, and up your data plan to include more tethering data. That's where you're probably going to end up, otherwise you'll be that guy that is still doing tech support in the middle of the first quarter.
ETA: Link to how to use Airplay to project from an iOS device to other devices like TVs.

Yea I agree. I tried to push espn from the phone app to my Apple TV and it doesn’t allow airplay. I bet it has built in software that detects screen sharing and disables it. Does suck though. Good luck.

They absolutely do. The app developer has the power (rightfully so) to control which device interfaces are used, whether you can even open the app with a VPN turned on, whether you can watch TV in locations that are not your home, etc.
For instance, a mobile device (or computer!) is treated differently than a regular TV by Hulu. Ex wife lives four miles away, and she "owns" the home address. I can't watch Hulu on my TV, but I can watch it on my computer.
Expect random misery. I could watch the Saints lose to the Rams in the playoffs in the middle of nowhere in England on my iPad, but you can't watch TV at a tailgate. Such is life.

i discovered a year or two ago that none of the disney services work this way. we tried to throw up disney movies on car screen to no avail. some kind of drm blocks it on all their apps. stream east is your friend

I'll probably end up with a HD antenna and watch whatever is on ABC or CBS. Not gonna do the satellite thing. Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.

Use your Phone as a hotspot to a laptop and stream from the laptop if that is an option. Or use a Firestick rather than a laptop with your phone as a hotspot. All this assuming that is doable with your service. If not you may be able to get a hotspot from your mobile provider.

So the iPhone acts as wifi with the Firestick picking up the feed? As you have probably already concluded, technology is not my strong suit. I had a black and white tv with a coat hanger as my antenna in my dorm back in the day.

Yeah, that should work theoretically. Throughput on gameday may end up being an issue, though, and I know some carriers used to throttle or even disallow tethering or using your phone as a hotspot. I am not sure if it was just perception rather than reality but when I had a dedicated hotspot (waay back through work) rather than using my phone, it seemed much better

Figured i'd report back in case anyone else has this issue. Got the certified Apple adapter in today and same result. Going with HD antenna and a batter with inverter for power.

Where are you located T-Boy?

That's a better solution, as we always had a 4-5 second delay with Hulu when outside Tiger Stadium.
However, that doesn't fix your problem of stuff that is televised on an ESPN or SEC network.

I'm in the HUB City.
Realize I will be limited to games ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX carry. I'm okay with that. At the end of the day, I'm there to see the Tigers play!!!
