To put into perspective how much RAM is being consumed by AI datacenters

The first few minutes of this video illustrate just how dire the situation is, not just for the gaming industry but all of the electronics/tech industry as a whole.

It is estimated that all future outlays for data center spending is basically 75% two companies. There is very little demand outside of these two.
Open AI and anthropic... Open AI financials are a disaster.. but maybe they are too big to fail.
Either they implode spectacularly or we bail them out with tax payer funds.
Guessing the latter happens and the memory issue continues marching forward

All of Hynix' (I think) 2027 production run is already sold. The 128GB I bought for under $400 last year is now worth more than the rest of my rig, except my NAS. A 5 year old 6TB drive is going for over $200 used, on eBay.

multiple that x4 for my RAID6 install and its literally a non-starter. i'm going to have to start out with a shitty usb drive and fill up the NAS later when things sort themselves out. never seen anything like it.
eta MY BAD. closer to $1,000 for a freaking 20TB drive now AND STILL CLIMBING

I usually drop two tiers down from top capacity to whatever was about $220 a drive when I was upgrading. That's why I was shocked as hell to see what the 4 and 6TB drives I just listed were going for. 6 years after I bought them, I'm going to get close to what I bought them for. Insane.

Everything I own has WAY too much RAM (32g) but it’s also all soldered except my old ddr4 laptop.
Maybe once Intel gets SYCL graphs to actually work on PyTorch, I’ll actually use more.
Seems like every single AI tool has the exact same options available:
1. Run CUDA
2. Be slow
3. Run GGUF, Onnx, RockM, or OpenVino with stripped out features.
