auto pin your last parking spot on iOS:

Google Maps on iOS quietly gained a new feature recently that automatically recognizes where you've parked your vehicle and saves the location for you.

I guess that's cool. Not sure how often I'd need that, but if this is something that is concerning for people - they could just put an airtag in the glove compartment. Could be a poor-man's LoJack.

Have I lost my mind in thinking that google maps has been (not without fail, but still) routinely saving my parking location for quite a while now? Like, at least a year or two?

i remember when we gave a damn about privacy

"google noticed you were parked at Larry Flynt's Hustler Club for 3 hours; would you like us to find the closest bank with plenty of one dollar bills?"

The moment everyone started using credit cards for everything, that notion went out the window.

that sicko who murdered and chopped up his wife was busted at lowes buying stuff with cash because they facial-recognized him and matched the time stamp to the receipt in that checkout station at that time to identify what he bought.

cameras/ai/facial recognition is our downfall. you cant just avoid owning a phone and think you wont be tracked.

In all fairness, when a wife disappears out of the blue, the husband is usually the first suspect. Your point is taken that there are cameras everywhere, and the odds of getting away with crime is way down.

That said, that's not what bothers me about lack of privacy. What bothers me is how future laws will be used to go after people retroactively. We're definitely headed to a, "Minority Report" future and it doesn't seem like there's anyone that's in a hurry to stop it.

Control of the masses is always the aim of any government. Technology, for all of its good, is also a yoke.

yep. look at the last 4 years under biden.

people were de-banked, de-jobbed, arrested and outcast because they disagreed with the covid 19 vaccine and/or wearing masks or going into a gym or to the beach during the pandemic.

i can't imagine a scenario where that doesn't happen again but 10x worse next time.

I have read a lot of people thinking that they have had this feature on Google Maps on an iPhone for awhile. Maybe it was being tested.

It’s not exactly new as Maps has had a similar feature since iOS 10. I am not sure if it had the auto removal after a set time (48 hours for google), how the notifications prompted to find car or if you had to search for “Parked Car”, or how well it works in iOS 26. You had to have significant locations turned on.

Receive notifications about your parked car

In the Settings app, tap Notifications.
Tap Maps.
Turn on Allow Notifications and select the type of alerts that you want to receive.

Get directions to your parked car

In Maps, search for Parked Car. Choose Parked Car from the results to view the location, edit the location, or add notes. Tap Directions to then route to your car.

On your Home Screen, tap the Search field. Tap Parked Car below the Siri Suggestions to get directions to your car.

You need to turn on Bluetooth and use Maps on an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 10 or later to use Show Parked Location. Maps drops a parked car marker when you disconnect your iPhone from your car’s Bluetooth or CarPlay system and exit your vehicle.

That's possible. And to be clear, it wasn't exactly like this with the car image and all of that. It was basically just an extra, automatic pin that I would sometimes see when I pulled out my phone when walking back to my car, particularly if I had to park and walk a ways, that said something like "last parked location" or something along those lines.
