Thinking of Cutting the Cable
Posted on 1/19/19 at 3:22 am

I'm looking for people in the Slidell area that have cut the cable and went with Directv Now, Hulu, Sling or YouTube TV. I'm wondering if the experience with streaming TV is at least comparable to cable. Are there many issues with buffering? Live sports, are they an issue or pretty much trouble free? Also, if you are using an external over the air antenna, how well do they work? How many channels do you get OTA?
Do you consider the change worth it? I live on the northeast side if that helps with answering the OTA question.
I am so sick of paying the damn cable bill!

VUE tv, cut cable , never look back

I dropped Cox Cable for DirecTV Now back in March of 2017 and couldn't be happier. Although I see comments on Facebook groups regarding buffering issues with the service, I've never really experienced any. I do use an Apple TV box mainly and it seems like those devices have the fewest issues. People using Roku or Fire devices seem to have a higher rate of problems. I'm in St. Charles Parish and get WWL (CBS), WDSU (NBC) and WVUE (Fox) through the service. I use a flat, leaf-style antenna for broadcast signals and get all three of those stations and their secondary digital channels as well as ABC, PBS and several other OTA. I have the antenna hanging in my attic.
The DVR needs some work, but it's fine for my needs. The main thing that bugs me is that my DirecTV Now credentials no longer work to access WATCH ESPN. So if I want to watch something through that service that isn't on the primery ESPN channels in my subscription, I have to use my Cox credentials. This only works at home, though, since I'm still a Cox Internet customer. If I'm mobile, I can't access anything via WATCH ESPN. Luckily most of the sports I want to catch are viewable through DirecTV Now. Although my package doesn't carry Fox Sports New Orleans, I can just login to the Fox Sports app with my DirecTV Now credentials and catch the Pelicans games.

Agreed, I think getting PSVue is a great first move, it's cheap and month to month.
If new to this it might be easier to start with PSVue, then add an IPTV as an extra way to get live TV. Trial and eror which IPTV works best on the setup then drop PSVue and go IPTV all the way.
I pay $49 a month for 50 megs down and $12 a month for IPTV with 1300 tv channels.
Best setup I've ever had. More content, no contract.
The living room is ran off a MBP using cordless keyboard and mouse and the bedrooms each have Nvidia Shield 500 gig boxes to run my IPTV apps and view movies on the HDD or strem from the network.

OP. I have used DTVNOW for since it was available. After working out issues its been rock solid
to the IPTV peeps. Is this gray area service? I don't know of too many legit IPTV services outside of the mainstream like DTVN, Vue, etc.

Do It. I have never looked back except to see all the money in my checking account. I have all this for about $100 month which is $50 less than just cable back in the day:
LUS Fiber - 50 MPS for $45 month (often runs much faster)
OTA - free w about 15 HD channels
Hulu - Basic at $6 month
Netflix - $12 month
Prime - $9 month or ($100/yr...really free cause I use Amz so often)
Sling - $30 month (Orange w/sports pkg for SECN, ESPN, Sports etc..)
Xfiniti - on loan from my Mom!!

Did it 2-3 years ago & use Vue and Netflix.
Don't miss Direct at all and will not go back to it or subscribe cable.

Have multiple posters here with No Sleep IPTV, make sure to get in their paid group to get live status updates
Been using multiple IPTV services, but they have been the best service and price. Haven't had cable in almost 3 years now..

I live inSlidell and have YouTube TV. $40 a month. Unlimited DVR. Never buffers. Local channels and tons of sports channels. I love it

Because it's perfectly legal to pay for streaming TV channels in the USA. It's legit. You aren't getting pirated movies, you are getting live TV.

Thanks for all the info guys. This stuff has been overwhelming. I got the wife to agree to try these services out. I am going to try all of them, but Directv Now seems to have everything we currently get from our cable. Now to get an OTA antenna installed. I have two old dishes still on my roof, one from Dish and an even older one from Direct. Has anyone ever used the post or mast from a dish to mount the OTA antenna? I also have a Motorola rotor for the antenna.

This is where I will end up. Might add Philo or something to get E&E channels (History, TLC) and Lifetime for my wife.
Really like Youtube TV.

Yes you can. I have an HDTV antenna mounted on a pole in a bucket of concrete in my attic. IMO it’s the best way to set up an hdtv antenna b/c you can move it around to find the best signal.
