Four of SONOS’ products are losing software support starting this May.

quote:

The four product lines losing software support in the spring are the original Zone Players (later sold under the names Connect and Connect: Amp); the very first Play:5 Sonos speaker; the CR200, a physical controller that preceded smartphone-app control; and the Sonos Bridge, which was used to wirelessly connect Sonos speakers together before that ability was moved into the speakers themselves. Sonos says these products have been stretched to their “technical limits” and that “over time, access to services and overall functionality will be disrupted, particularly as partners evolve their technology.”

The Connect and Connect AMP are the ones that will be the problem. Integrators across the country are going to be banging their heads against the wall this summer. There will be a ton of pissed off owners out there.

quote:

To update your entire system to the latest software, which you’ll inevitably want to do, that legacy speaker will not be able to accept the update. As long as that weak link is sitting on your network, it will prevent all of your Sonos hardware from getting the newest software, gaining new features, and receiving bug fixes. You have three options at that point: Keep running your entire Sonos network on the old software, replace the dud speaker or amp with a newer model, or isolate that obsolete speaker by setting it up on its own discrete Sonos network.

Just wait til services like Spotify or Apple Music, one of the biggest selling points of SONOS, stop working with the older firmware.

Thanks SONOS

I was bummed to see this as well. I have been running the Connect and Connect Amp products in my house and office for 4 years.

Sucks to pay all that money and be hung out to dry.

I will be building a new house shortly and I suppose I will need to look in another direction.

What are the cool kids using for whole house audio that's not Sonos?

Saw this yesterday. decided not to post it.

So they simply aren't releasing updates like most cellphones because the hardware is to old to handle it.

I think the 30% off a new speaker is a pretty good deal.

Apple has been doing this for years.

I’ll be sure to tell that to the folks who just bought multiple connect amps last quarter. However SONOS did just have a price increase on the Port and Amp

I know, you were just in here recently bitching at Apple for doing this with Apple TV’s.

I was bummed to read this as I have the OG Play:5 and the OG Connect:AMP. Then I said, well the Play:5 is in my bedroom so no worries if it doesn't get updates. Same for the Connect:AMP

BUT THEN

They said the newer hardware won't continue to receive updates. I'm not sure if that's a big deal to me or not as I have a Playbar, Sub, 2 OG Play:1s that I use for my surround sound.
I don't play Apple Music through that as I have an Apple TV 4k that we just use the Apple Music app.

Regardless, it's not a good look but I'm not 100% sure how much it will really impact me. That's the equivalent of Pioneer cutting off firmware updates to a Receiver. The receiver still works... so ?!

Kinda. Most people don’t buy a AVR because of the streaming services where SONOS is just that, a media steamer. If those services no longer work you are SOL or have to find a wonky work around.

My AVR is only connected to the net so I can IP control it. I have firmware updates turned off. So I wouldn’t need to change it until there is a hardwire update like 8K. But I’m sure I’ll go through multiple AVRs before that happens anyway.

When did they stop selling these? I didn't see a date with a quick google search, but I see that they were at least made in 2015. I'd still be pissed if I bought a AMP in 2015 or 2016 and it won't be getting updates. Thankfully my sonos equipment isn't on that list. I came very close to buying a couple used Connect Amps on craiglist about 6 months ago. Glad I passed.

That's fair, I just don't happen to be using it for any %age as a media streamer. I merely use it as speaker output in it's simulated 5.1 setup and let my Apple TV be the streamer.
But I fully understand I'm probably the outlier.

this is concerning. If they ever kill the play 1s I’m fricked. But they are still supporting the play 3 so I guess there’s that.

Looks like some connects are considered modern and are still supported. Not sure how you find out.

Anything "smart" will reach this fate long before a less convenient system would.
Multi-zone amps are low-tech and don't come with a discreet application for all your compatible music, so you're going to have to choose your source carefully.

There should be a way for them to develop a bridge device that works to relay music from the modern devices to the legacy devices. It really can’t be that hard.

They could probably get away with selling it for $350 too.

If the timeline holds with the play 1s and they make them legacy devices in 2024 that means I will have gotten 10+ years out of them. I won’t be happy but I can deal with that.

Just got another email from SONOS saying they F’d up and apologizing. They must have gotten blasted. Rightfully so...
I have three of those legacy products.

This really was an incredible oversight by them. Their leadership is seriously disconnected with their customers.

I have 8 connect amps and 2 connects. I’m not too happy, altho I been thinking of upgrading to the newer amps anyway. I’d rather sell my old ones but I’ll take 30% if that’s my only option I guess.

You are the type of customer who this most affects. Your replacement cost is much higher than someone like me who has a beam and play 1s scattered across my house. Write them a letter expressing your concern if you have time.
