T-Mobile responds to Verizon by improving its own unlimited data plan

It’s been only a day since Verizon resurrected its unlimited data plan, and the company’s competitors are already doing their best to try and counter. T-Mobile has made the first move, with CEO John Legere moments ago announcing two improvements to the carrier’s T-Mobile One unlimited plan that both take effect this coming Friday. Beginning February 17th, the plan will include HD video, an upgrade to the 480p/DVD-quality “optimizations” that are currently in place.
Until now, customers have needed to spend extra money to stream HD video using cellular data. They could either subscribe to the regular T-Mobile One plan and spend $3 on any day they wanted to watch high definition video, or pay an extra $15 monthly for T-Mobile One Plus, which offered “unlimited HD day passes” and some other perks. But these restrictions around video have been the worst thing about T-Mobile’s latest unlimited plan from the start. Verizon’s plan doesn’t downgrade video quality, which left T-Mobile little room but to make this choice. It’s unclear whether the annoying HD day passes will still be part of the plan. Verizon doesn’t make its new unlimited customers jump through those hoops.
The other change Legere announced is related to the hotspot feature of T-Mobile One, which lets you share your smartphone’s data connection with other devices. As of Friday, the plan will let customers use up to 10GB of high-speed data each month for tethering. That matches Verizon’s plan, which also allows for 10GB of LTE tethering. But again, prior to today, T-Mobile One only allowed 3G hotspot speeds unless you paid extra for the T-Mobile One Plus plan.
Lastly, Legere announced a promotion that will offer two lines of T-Mobile One for $100. A two-line family plan usually costs $120 per month. Unlike other carriers, T-Mobile includes taxes and fees in its advertised price — so that should be all you pay month to month. Verizon charges $140 (plus taxes and fees) for a two-line unlimited plan.

Hopefully AT&T will come around and allow tethering off of their unlimited plans as well

So Verizon if offering tethering?? If so, that's bigly.

So my wife and I have been with AT&T for ever, and this might finally be the time to make a switch. However we are on the NEXT plans and I still owe $290 and my wife owes $440 on our iPhone devices to AT&T.
Will T-Mobile pay off those remaining balance if we make that switch to T-Mobile? Are there any restrictions when it comes to T-Mobile paying off any outselling ETF / device payments?

Verizon will!
(To be fair, I think all carriers will)

Race to the bottom. Looking forward to Legere's dumb and dumber comments when TMUS reports this morning. That guy's a maniac.

Verizon is back on my customer service shite-list. I have to use them because they are the only service that works in the three areas where i spend all my time.
I called to upgrade to the moto z the other day, during the 50% promo. I'd tried online but as usual it said i had to call because my account is weird due to a merge with wife's account. When i called i got a "call back later. we're busy." no ability to leave message.
i tried chat. same.
got on chat with a rep today and she was wholly unuseful. asked her how to upgrade most efficiently and if she could do something due to my attempt to upgrade during the sale. nada. she just kept repeating that the sale was over.

My wife and I have been grandfathered att unlimited, but due to rate increase I can opt out with no ETF in march. It's been a good plan for me bc I still get subsidized phone. Although, now that's ou Also.
I now have a work phone also, but have kept personal just in case I leave my job and I was thinking unlimited was too good to give up.
I'm about to peace out tho, now that it looks like unlimited is no longer going to be unattainable.

"Dumb, dumber, and yellow" - there it is.

"Verizon is 'dumber' now - they've taken over 'dumber'."
I think Cramer made a Freudian slip - "My job is to dissemble, uh... disassemble."

Market forces are doing work!
The wife and I switched from separate carriers a year and a half ago (she from T-Mobile, me from Sprint). We were thankful for the service when the flood hit (frick you, ATT) and haven't had much issue with VZ service here in Baton Rouge. Going to swing by the VZ store this weekend and see if we can change into the new unlimited plan (it's the only thing I missed about my Sprint plan).

Can someone tell me if I'm going to hate myself for switching from Verizon to T-Mobile? The plan is so much cheaper (my wife is going back to school full time. frick me right?), just terrified my service is going to blow in Memphis.

I had it in Memphis about 3-4 years ago and it was awful.
Also had terrible coverage on interstate driving to and from Louisiana.
They may have improved since then

Hopping on this plan as soon as I get out of work on Friday! I just recently downgraded from Unlimited down to 6GB/month and now I'll go back to Unlimited and end up saving $93/month.

I pay 35$ a month for 2 lines, includes unlimited text, voice and 6gb of data from T-Mobile.

We are on a four line family unlimited plan. I fly a lot. On American Airlines mostly. The Gogo Internet service is free for one hour. I carry a personal and a business phone, plus my tablet, so I use one device until I time out, then use a second and third device using my wife's phone number and then my daughter's phone number.
Also, we are in Mexico two to four times a year. T-mobile service is good in Mexico at no charge or fees.
